Al. If I get half as much 'tour' time as you, I will be happy.

Since the cols of the Alps and the Pyrenees aren't exactly close by, you could do a lot worse than Pilgrims Way on clear day.

Maybe not.

This will be familiar to some, when you get here for the last time you know things can only get better
Unless you're riding 100, in which case there is plenty of pain still to come.

Hah, Dammit I recognised Skid Hill Lane just from your description (not knowing the road names).
I think you can have Pilgrims Corlis. In a similar vein, I really like the unnamed road between Broxted and Tilty Church near Thaxted in Essex. It goes on for a while like this and is nicely undulating.

The one I do each year is 1.5km over 21km, with a constant gradient. Much more friendly.
I bored of failing to get up it fixed, without a walk though. Bringing the BMC this year. Need a lower gear for the clay path.
I've entered it.The run too.

I'm a stronger runner than a cyclist. But I'm not sure I'd want to run it.

Anyone know of any roads with decent riding around SW of Heathrow?

Routes database>>>>
but on relatively quiet times the A332 ain't too bad. And there are loads of little winding roads around Harmondsworth Village that are fair enough from the M roads to be quite adn rather picturesque. -

I don't have pics on hand, but the D400 road from Kas, Turkey to Fethiye is pretty amazing, as are most of the mountain passes. The driving wasn't even that crazy.
The D400 offers plenty of this:
