  • They are definitely an acquired taste. I was unsure about them at the start and was weighing up the more classic look of the force rings. I got these for a bit of a bargain and the rings have really grown on me. Thanks for the offer Dammit, but I'll stick with these for he time being.

  • No worries, mine can live on the shelf for the foreseeable.

  • I quite like the look of the sram red rings

  • And thanks for the clamp info wherry. I'll stick with my 17g porker ;)

  • I was going to say you should take Dammit up on his offer of black Sram Red rings but then I looked at Enigma Mk1 and suddenly it seemed more suited to stick to the standard Red rings.

  • I'm not sure about the chainrings, Colin.

  • I'm not sure about the chainrings, Colin.

    Why so srs?
Well.. I like it.. so thats that.
Performance aside, Aesthetically I think the (visual) weight of the rings helps to balance out the oversized downtube. It reminds me of this.. which imo looks great. maybe I need red decals.. and a Ti stem.

  • This page needs pictures..

    stem switch

  • ^ Glad to have contributed to such a fine looking machine ;-)

  • Love it. I never realised gumwalls could look so good on Ti. Will investigate for mine

  • Thanks very much. Last few bits arrived today so will hopefully get this finished tonight and final adjustments to gears.
The front is very clunky when shifting down. It really bangs into place and is very stiff when shifting up. I've heard this is a common problem/normal with SRAM but may be something to do with the over tensioning of the shifter cable.

  • ^ I have the exact same symptoms with my sram group, I just figured it was a sram characteristic. If you manage to cure it, do tell!

  • (Please tell me to knob off if this is obvious)

On my new Shimano groupset, I had the cable on the wrong side of the mounting bolt (inside instead of outside IIRC), and it made it almost impossible to shift up. Re-attaching it on the outside of the mech made it light as a feather.

So on image below, cable came from under the BB on the far left, and then bolted around the left half of the mounting bolt, instead of going underneath and round to the RHS

(I also know old SRAM is known for having issues with the FD but thought I'd put that out there)

  • ^ what you did if I'm understanding correctly is decrease the leverage of the mech by bringing the cable up the RHS of the pinch screw. That is a common trick for running 7900 front shifters on a Sram shifter because Shimano messed with the cable pulls of 7900.

  • Thanks for this, though I do have it set up correctly.. to the LHS.
I was reading a bit about it here, which sound like exactly the same problem. http://forums.roadbikereview.com/sram/hard-shift-rival-front-derailleur-238361.html I'm going to have a twiddle with the cable tension tonight and see if that helps.

  • And if that's wrong, acetone.

Seems that reynolds often have ghost decals when one remove them. Mine does too.

  • Great. It's quite rare that gumwalls actually look as good as that on a modern build I think.
