  • Eccellente! Are you happy with it?

  • Need to stop visiting threads like this - makes me feel bad about all my bike projects/efforts.

    Great build.

  • Remember how those Challenge Criteriums look, it lasted about 3 rides on my bike:(

  • Really? Mine held up pretty good.

  • Remember how those Challenge Criteriums look, it lasted about 3 rides on my bike:(

yeah this - feel nice, but shit overall as they puncture every ride.

Bike looks lovely wharry, don't ruin it with a Ti stem, they are shit and wobbly, and they are for old people :)

I've been running them on my other bike for years now and they've stood up really well. The compound is quite soft but not half as soft as veloflex.

    Cheers for all the comments.

  • nice work sir!, made me have a quick rethink how lush 'modern' bikes can be, this is one of the best i have seen

  • Speedplay ti... Pls

Never, negligible weight savings (21g) and you lose the ability to fix a cadence magnet to the axle.
    It's a silly "upgrade".

  • 60g, and if you've chased the weight out of everything else then finding 60g to get rid of is quite handy.

You can always superglue a small rare earth magnet to the crank.

  • Was weight saving part of this build though? He has gone for sram rival for most of it .

  • Actually only meant the look of the gleaming clean sidewalls rather then them being delicate. Mine got brake dust + dirt embedded and refused to clean up again.

  • This is by no means going to be a weight wiener, so an extra few grams here or there isn't going to be a problem.

Yep.. Like I said, the aim wasn't to create a weight weenie.. a plus 1400g frame and rival would be a pretty illogical starting point if I was, not to mention all the other weight compromises. I was aiming for something that was reasonably light but robust and most of all fun to ride. I wanted something that was sub 8kg, this comes in at just over 7.9kg and feels great to ride, so I'm more than happy.

Ah.. yes, this is true. The ones on my Borghini have been on there for about 6 months. A bit of a scrub cleans them up reasonably well but they'll never be back to perfect.

    21g per pedal* (claimed weight)

I agree that on a no holes barred weenie project that 42g is obscene but this is a Ti framed bike that, judging by the spec, is built to be ridden rather than mollycoddled.

*I was wrong, I remembered it as total weight difference.

gasp how could you say such things, shame on you Dan ;)
Maybe it's just me, but a Moots stem was one of the best (and most notable) parts upgrade to my Merlin.

Its looking awesome wharry, but I admit I would like to "see" a Ti Stem, or Edge/Enve seatpin on there.
If the Challenge tyres let you down, I've been running rivendell Ruffy Tuffy's on my Ti Bike over winter and they seem to have held up well, 28c mind.

  • I think it looks great as is but if you got it in the budget id go slip a ti stem in there too.

  • if he gets a ti stem, then hes going to have to get a ti headset and ti spacers too.

I think it looks good as is ;)

    For reference;

    Chromoly axles:

    Ti axles:

  • I was comparing stainless to official speedplay Ti, not your moody ones.

  • Buy a pair of chromoly+the Ward axles=cost of the stainless, weight of the Ti.

    Winner!

  • There's nothing moody about Ward axles. I've got a set in my Bebops and they were reasonably priced and fractionally lighter than the official versions.

  • And you get to play a fun game of, don't fuck up the pedals.

  • They're not made by Speedplay, who have taken issue with them being available, hence my use of moody.
Would "Alternative manufacturer" have been less offensive?

I've never used them so wouldn't be able to comment on the quality but guessing by the support they garner from people who do use them I'd have to assume they're decent.

  • That's down to the owner of Speedplay being a massive dick though not due to any kind of poor quality in the Ward axles.

He has opened up legal battles with pretty much anyone who used his products name, from people selling second hand pedals on ebay to the big battle against Bebop because their pedals were the same shape. If you get bored and want to read into this a bit more look in here, it gets good on page 8.
