  • Willing to sell the Shimano 600 cantis ?

By the way (I know it's too late), Dia Compe cantis are a bit similar to the Shimanos.

  • I am intrigued.. those bars look like they are oversized, 31.8,mm, but you are running a quill stem.

He's using Nitto M106NAS bars, which are 26mm....

BTW - Looking sick JLN! Good job.

  • Yeah okay, I should have worked that out for myself from the parts list up at the top of the page. Still need to find an MTB stylee quill stem with a 26mm grab. So far they all seem to be 25.4mil. I'm planning a cross on an old frame too, and I don't think a classic looking road stem is right. I want something similar to what Vs&Ns put on this one. Anyhow, thanks... back to Ebay...

Yes, yes I am. I'll try and clean them up and take some photos this weekend.

I have the original brake pads, but they hard as all hell, but I will chuck in the pads that came with my Frogglegs if you wish. I was using these Kool Stop Eagle Claw's with them.

But I've stolen them to use with the Frogglegs.

I have not been able to find a mtb-style quill stem like that with anything other than a 25.4mm pinch, which limits me to classic bars. Am I wrong? Any ideas/tips for stems that'll work with 26mm or 31.8mm bars?

    That is correct.

    Thanks Dougie Freshness Burger.

Keep an eye out for the old Salsa quill stems. They're 26.0 clamp. I got mine off US eBay. The shorter ones are harder to find, as are the straight (no rise) ones. The one I'm using is 110mm with some positive rise. I figured I could use a longer stem as the reach on the Nitto bars is a lot shorter the than older style drops I was using.

    Nice.
I'm not after the cantibrakes, but I saw a German guy, who really wants them. I'll send him to you. You can work it out together.

  • Oh yeah, spotted this jersey last night. I think I need to purchase it. If only it said HEUVELMANS, not just HEUVEL.

  • ^ almost half price right now if you're a littleun'

  • I'm a size medium in my MASH jersey...

  • Almost finished it, spent most of the night adjusting the front and rear derailleurs and they're still not perfect. Would have liked to finish it tonight, but no such luck.

    LOL.

But seriously, the front derailleur is pissing me off. It does shift to the big ring now, but it's an effort to do so. I don't know if I have too much tension, or not enough. Also, it rubs on the chain unless it's on the 11 or 12t at the back.I think it might be the angle of the derailleur. Because it's a clamp on, it might not be sitting correctly.

I think tonight it will be me, some beers, the bike on the work stand and some Fugazi until it's fixed. I hope.

  • Have you anchored the cable on the correct side of the bolt? If its on the wrong side it will take much more pressure on the lever to pull the cage over.

When the derraileur is in the small ring, there should be virtually no tension in the cable. In this position, the mechanism should be supported by the limit screw alone. (The cable shouldn't be slack as such, just not tight enough to lift the mechanism off the limit screw)

Is it at the right height? The bottom edge should hang about 1mm above the teeth of the big ring.

That's what I'm not 100% sure on. I think I have, but it's hard finding a clear picture (or video) of where it is suppsoed to go.

That's what I thought. This is all new to me. All other derailleurs I've set up have been friction downtube shifters.

Will check tonight. The angle might be a touch off too.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Finished this today! Not sure what was going on with the front derailleur, but it shifts fine now.

Still needs a few little tweaks. Sounds like the chain is rubbing, but I can't quite pinpoint where. Sounds like its not going through the rear derailleur properly. It also skips on the cassette when the pressure is put down on it (like climbing in the big ring). The front brake squeals like a molested pig, the rear is silent though.

Took about three minutes to get used to the SRAM shifting. I was a bit worried, but it's really nice to use.

Sorry for the iPhone photos, my computer is dead.

Also, I listened to Murder By Death, Murder City Devils, Rites Of Spring and Tarantel while I built it up.

I bought the cranks and rear derailleur second hand, but the seller had a new front derailleur as well, so I got them $150AUD, the shifters were new from eBay. They were $260AUD + $30 postage. I got the cassette with the wheels and some brakes for $100AUD, but sold the brakes for $30.

I took it for a proper off-road ride this morning. The shifting is working fine now. I can shift through all the sprockets from both chain rings with out any rubbing. The front brake isn't squealing, but it's too "tappy", so I need to reduce the tension on the cable. The headset is rattling loose as well. I think it's too much tyre pressure and bumpy paths.

Other than that it's riding perfectly. I really like the SRAM shifting.

  • Looks similar to this now (which was intentional).
