Thanks, I'll have a look tonight at the different ones.

Just hit buy-it-now on these...
Pretty damn cheap, but I've heard good reviews.

I'd be curious to know if they work better. I had exactly the same problem with my CR720/520s... Which is a shame because using vbrake pads is usually a plus.

I considered getting some CR720's. I have some on my Shogun tourer, and they're fine. No real shudder or squealing, bu not fun to set up at all, and I found them really wide.
I was also advised to buy Shorty Ultimates, but the Frogglegs were ~$50 posted, the Ultimates are ~$90 EACH, plus postage.

Picking up some secondhand SRAM Rival shifters tomorrow, so I'm getting close.
Just gotta find the time to actually put it all together.

So the seller of the shifters can't "find" them, so that's put a spanner in the works. Looks like I have to save some more $$$ so I can buy some new ones.
Still waiting on my brakes to come in the post, but I fly to Malaysia in just over a week, so looks like this build will be on hold until the new year.

Brakes have arrived, and one fitted on the front to make sure it works, which it does.
I swapped the stock pads out with the Kool Stops I was using on the Shimano 600 canti's, so hopefully that will improve them even further.

*Finally *ordered the SRAM Rival shifters this morning. They should be here in a few weeks. I'll be ordering the bartape and chain next week, and I'm done...! Then I just have to build it up.

Last two pieces were ordered tonight...
And now I play the waiting game... there's a race on the 27th of this month. I'd like to try and enter it.

I was bored today and started putting it together. Initially I was going to just put the BB in and make sure it fit okay, but I got carried away.
(Sorry for Instagram photo)
At the stage, the cranks are fitted (still need to get a smaller big ring), the brakes are fitted, but not adjusted, wheels fitted, cassette fitted (but I need the lockring tool) and the front and rear derailleur fitted. I have the headset as well, but I'm waiting for my friend to come round and install it. The angle of the bars isn't perfect either. Oh, the seat and seat post need adjusting too.
Hopefully the parts I've ordered online will be here soon and it will be finished.

Really like this, but with a modern group, the seat is kinda out of place, isn't it?
-
• #39
Maybe, but those old Unicanitor's are just so comfortable.

True that, I love mine.

looking amazing. i wish i was in a country that had flowers in bloom.
just noticed the the mudguard eyelets and cable routing, was this a touring frame?
-
• #42
Nah. Dedicated CX frame. Tight geometry, no water bottle bosses, not drilled for brakes / guards and no rack mounts.

Shifters arrived this moring.
So close to finishing.

So everything I needed arrived yesterday (don't you love it when that happens?) and I bought a new black seat post as well. I also picked up a 46t "big" chain ring.
My friend came over last night to install the headset... that was a bit of a pain in the arse because the the old headset must have had a bigger stack height, plus it had the 1" threaded cable guide washer, so that was an issue. Ended up finding a washer and chucking that on, but it looks a bit shit (black headset, silver washer), so I might just measure it, measure again and cut the steerer down. There's plenty of thread on there, so it will be fine. Because there's a positive rise stem, with the high stack headset, it looks too Fred for my liking.
Everything else went on fine. Shifters are installed, all the cable outers are cut and taped to the bars in place with the cables in ready to be attached and cut. Seat and seat post are in, brakes are on, derailleurs are on, cranks are installed with the new chainring as well.
Just have to do the fiddly parts now like attach all the cables, put the chain on and adjust the gears and brakes. Oh, and tape up the bars... Hopefully it will be complete Thursday night, ready for the weekend.

I am intrigued.. those bars look like they are oversized, 31.8,mm, but you are running a quill stem. I have not been able to find a mtb-style quill stem like that with anything other than a 25.4mm pinch, which limits me to classic bars. Am I wrong? Any ideas/tips for stems that'll work with 26mm or 31.8mm bars?
Ah didn't know you were an Aussie!
