  • Loved it, especially the stem which look very fitting, that sort of rise look spot on.

I do miss the old steel Salsa stem which look fantastic.

As for front derailleur, you're not the first one.

  • It looks great I'd love to see some better photos.

I'll do my best. At the moment I only have my iPhone and iPad. My computer doesn't work, so I can't upload anything from my "proper" camera.

  • Chucked some 32c Panaracer Pasela's on it last night because I'm riding it so much on the road. I didn't want to wear my 'cross tyres down too much. I'll swap them back before the next race.

  • Awesome build, came out a beauty. Sram has a dirty habit of making any bike, old or new look gorge.

  • Must've been a hellua lots of fun to ride on the road.

Also, I listened to Murder By Death, Murder City Devils, Rites Of Spring and Tarantel while I built it up.

I take it those are not Simon and Garfunkel releases?

  • Nice bike

  • Thanks.

I'm still not sold on the boner-iffic stem. I don't know whether to go a touch shorter, with less positive rise, or swap it for a black quill to ahead converter and black threadless stem. Finding a black quill stem the same style (eg. Salsa) that doesn't have a positive rise, or is 120mm+ long is difficult.

  • ^ I still have a spare 110mm Kelly stem that looks the same as the salsa. They may even still have them on ebay. Let me know if you're interested.

JUst checked. The ebay seller was "milewidesales" and in the US.

  • I thought the stem look boss, make it look somewhat custom, shame really but fit is more important.

  • Yeah, it';s growing on me. I'll leave it for now. I have more important things to spend my money on (like saving for Japan).

  • Raced this last night and it went well. My body on the other hand, didn't go so well. I came last in my grade... time to start training for the season that starts in April.

  • I saw that photo of you getting rad air, I was jelly

The air didn't look as rad as it felt.

Here's my mate Tommy getting some rad air too.

Such a summer CX photo... beer, t-shirts, dust... and skin suits.

  • Looks lovely.

  • Well it's changed a bit... It's now got a Sim Works (by Nitto) stem, with the front brake cable going through the stem (it came drilled), black H+Son Archetype's laced to Shimano 105 hubs and Tektro CR720 brakes and Salmon Kool Stop padds. Oh, and new Flite saddle.

I swapped out the brakes because the Frogglegs were pretty shit, even with salmon Kool Stop pads. Couple of sketch\y descents in the wet made me finally upgrade the brakes.

I'll take a photo one of these days.

  • Great build, nice to see a old CX-steel being put to use!

Now I'm a bit late to the party but I'd really look into mini-v brakes instead of going through all the hassle that is cantilevers. This comes from me who had "the ultimate setup" aka Paul neo retro up front and touring in the back for heel clearance. Belive me when I say that stopping wasn't an option with those things. More like scrubbing of some speed, even worse on carbon rims. Overcooked som many hairpins due to not being able to slow down enough in time. And I spent hours and hours fiddling with toe in and cable tension/hanger position. Nothing helped.

I went with the cheapest of Tektro-knock off's off ebay or maybe xxcycle (~10$ per brake incl hardware). Now modulation and actual braking can ensue, even in mud/wet conditions! I can OTB with one finger on the brakes if I wanted to, just to try and make clear of how much more power I have compared to "the best" cantis. A nice bonus is that you automagically eliminate all brake shudder you might/might get up front with cantis. Just a thought on a possible and really cheap upgrade.

Otherwise A+ on a great build!

  • This is what it looks right now. Couldn't be happier with the Tektro's compared to the Frogglegs. I didn't want to go with Mini-V's on this as a "classic" build, plus my stem is drilled for a front brake.

I won't be making any more changes to this bike. I'm looking at getting a new frame later this year, so I think I'll be donating some parts from this to it and rebuilding this with Nitto moustache bars, but we'll see what happens.

  • Oz seems like such a rad country for riding on dirt and gravel

  • Instagram shot because I can. Have ghetto clamped a bottle cage on because we've had a lot of days over 40°C lately. And I mean a lot.

  • None whatsoever.

  • Bike remains rad as fuck, down under seems like cross heaven

  • ^ I concur. Rad as fook.

  • @Spotter, only cross heaven if you despise traditional muddy/wet/awesome belgian-style CX.
    Gravel roads for dayyyyyyys but.
