  • Nice picture - thanks!

Am away for a week, but will check thread when I'm back and see what interest there is for doing this on 8 or 9 Sept. I think I have a slight preference for doing it on the Sunday.

  • I d go for the sunday, as I d be able to come, but also the Essex Lanes are quieter on a saturday...

  • this is something I have just seen. looks awesome.
theres been some "wild swimming" up here at stonebridge. the kids (and i am using the term widely) have figured out that the open lock is good for swiming. has ladder, and a convenient dive platform....

being on the north side of tottenham its pre - sewer dump so the waters pretty clean.

not that I'd do it... but it seems really popular, just saying.

  • damn! can't do 8th or 9th

  • Looks like TNRC deluxe might be on 8/9. Don't want a clash so will see what they settle with.

  • TNCR Deluxe has moved back to end of Sept. Happy to do this on Saturday if anyone's keen.

  • Hmm, possibly in, will report back!

  • I could be tempted, particularly as it would mean ending up in Suffolk in time for the ToB to go past...

  • Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • OK, so I am dithering about dates (something has come up on the Saturday I would rather not miss). Could you be tempted out on Sunday 9 instead?

  • I think I would be much more likely to do the 9th :)

  • I can indeed be tempted.

Also, I can't actually swim. May bring an inflatable.

  • I'm a terrible swimmer, thank god it was fairly shallow (could tip toe the floor) in clifton hampden :)

    Lots of fun though!

  • too much work on to make it this weekend. sadface.

  • The water is v shallow and no current. OK, let's make it the 9th, weather permitting.

  • Super thread, KT Bee. I just started reading Waterlog! Interested for Sunday, if love of my life can do without me that day.

  • Sunday's better for me, I have to be home by 19.00 on Saturday. IoW now postponed.
    New list?

  • Right you are. 8am, Sunday 9 September - Pub on the Park, London Fields.

(Sort of testing the water to see who's interested)

This ride has my attention. I haven't been wild swimming since Sweden. And somewhere I have little travel towels too. Perfect.

  • Ooh, excellent, I was hoping you might re-run this on a weekend. In.

Also KT I forgot to tell you but after I couldn't go to Clifton Hampden and Corlis Benefideo forgot his wallet the night before the ride we went to Clifton the following weekend. It was great so thanks for the inspiration. Also dragged my other half along and it was the furthest he's ever ridden (although he needed some poking to get in the Thames properly!).

  • Great stuff - fingers crossed the weather holds.

I warn you now that, sans garmin, this relied on a fair amount of chap (and chappess) nav. Made it more fun in a lot of ways, but it wasn't 'polished'.

@Fox - so glad you made it to Clifton Hampden. The river here is much calmer, if your other half fancies another dip.

  • I have a Garmin if someone wants to route it (sticking to roads rather than straight lines that chop through buildings).

  • I've put what I think the route was in the OP. It'll get us there, anyway.

  • On the route, this is just a suggestion, and a bit cheeky as it's KT's ride, however...

I noticed the route was a bit B-road heavy - presumably because it's based on the Dunwich route. They're ok at night but in the day a bit busy and monotonous IMHO, especially on a Sunday when there's more traffic about.

The route below is 3.6 miles longer in total, but has an extra 25 (!) miles of pleasant, scenic lanes, about 16 miles less of B roads and about 3 miles less of A-roads:

    http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1671229

The main changes are on the way out (via Woodford Bridge/Chigwell Row/Lambourne End which means nice lanes after 14 miles, whereas going via Epping/North Weald Basset means 24 miles of slog before you hit the lanes) then between Moreton and the Rodings, the Rodings and Dunmow and Great Bardsfield and Wethersfield, where it's much nicer to cut across via Waltham's Cross.

Sound good..? Sorry for fiddling, but as you may have guessed I like lanes and route fettling...

There's no way I'll get the other half to do 80 miles, unfortunately :(
