Really bad luck Tommy. You had a spill recently too right?
-

Sorry to hear that. I was on those roads today and it certainly was sketchy. At the top of Toys Hill there was a nasty patch of black ice that downed a number of riders. I only managed to stay upright as I was on my fixed and find it easier to control things on that one.
I hope the aches and pains don't last too long.

Broke a rib while fannying about after too much (just enough) beer. Not much sympathy from the girlfriend, unsurprisingly.
To add insult to injury, my "sweet skid" was in front of a bunch of friends and also a pair of attractive young ladies that happened to be walking past.

So you were trying to impress some women, and expect sympathy from your girlfriend? Stay classy.

I didn't see the girls walking past until after the incident.
We had just left the pub, one friend on a bike in front, a couple in behind. Was pulling a skid with my weight quite far forward. About half way through I realised I wasn't going to stop in time and grabbed a handful of front brake. The front let go, my ribs landed on the stem and I did a roly-poly, landed on the ground and then caught my bike that was just about to land on me and cause further injury.
Mate asks 'what was that?', girls looked shocked. Reply 'sweet skid', and try to ride off as nonchalantly as possible.
Woops.

What are the signs of a broken rib?
I fell pretty bad on mine yesturday..lost the front wheel on some ice and kept my hands on the bars so they took all the impact with the road.
Can't see any bruising and they are not too painful on touch but if make any movement requiring back muscles im in hell.
eg: standing up, getting changed, brushing my teeth
Hoping they are just badly badly bruised. -

An x ray will show up a broken rib. Though generally no treatment is given even if broken.
You may have pulled or strained an intercostal muscle.
-
• #984
Never broken one before, but have pulled muscles there. Main difference for me was that it hurts to breathe.

I think I broke one a couple of years ago, I could feel it crunching when I moved. I went to a&e where they prodded me (I cried, it was embarrassing), said it was probably broken and told me to go away because they couldn't do anything.
So I have no advice beyond don't go to a&e and have lots of baths.

Only advice I was given was to manage the pain with painkillers and make sure I breathe fully in order for it to heal properly.

Just don't sneeze.

Or ride as a passenger over speed humps

I bust a rib avoiding a ped on London Bridge. It was sore for about six weeks, especially when engaging in any sort of exertion. The rib, not the ped.

I'm finding curling up on a sofa is best but even then it just randomly spasms without any provocation every now and again

Bruised, cracked or broken all hurt like fuck but all basically involve sitting around all day and not moving. I medicated with whisky.

This. Make sure you have adequate pain relief - if you are only taking shallow breaths (because of pain) then there is a risk of developing chest infection in the parts of the lung you aren't aerating properly. Good analgaesia (pain relief) can be provided by taking regular paracetamol and/or ibuprofen, plus (if needed) something stronger. However, I do recommend you taking simple analgaesics regularly as the maximum pain relief can take a little while to build up and is pretty effective when maintained.
Also, check the link that Tommy posted, it's got some good advice.

hit the deck again along beech farm road going back to west wickerham.
My ribs took most the impact, hope they aren't anything more than bruised.
Using my Tramadol prescription for its medical purpose for a change.Managed my first day using only off the shelf Analgesics today.
A few hundred mg of Ibuprofen, it wasn't by choice but wokeup on New Years day with the worse stomach cramps ive ever had.Decided to layoff the Codeine, the health warnings on the packet suggest you will be come a ranging drug zombie if you use them for longer than 3 days anyway.
I miss the lovely cotton wool world of being on doped up but the pain actually isnt too bad.. as its only been 5 days does that suggest my ribs are only bruised and not broken?

Codeine does fuck all for me, ditto tramadol*. there's no upside when I injure myself
*which is a shame because my girlfriend used to have bags of the stuff for her bad back.

Ha. Bet Em will have you chomping them down when she finds out that it delays ejaculation.

Me.. not once but twice.
Was taking a leisurely sunday ride with the club to try and get some confidence back.
Enjoyable morning in the crisp winters air soon turned sour when the descending a north facing incline on pilgrims way I noticed too late the frost had turned into sheet ice. Then hit the deck again along beech farm road going back to west wickerham.
My ribs took most the impact, hope they aren't anything more than bruised.

New helmet I got for christmas is scratched.
I'm really not enjoying this cycling lark at the moment.Watchout for ice.. the road temp is well below freezing.
Tommy, are you in Catford CC? If so I think I was riding with you when you crashed. If I'd have known it was you I'd have brought up bitcoin!

No.. a proper cycling club wouldn't allow me in.
But the first time I crashed tried to warn a couple of cyclists behind me about the ice.. unfortunately telling someone not to break normally results in them breaking and down they went too.
Was that you?
^ not in my experience, although my frequency in taking drugs as a direct relationship to the chance occurrence of the other, so that might be why.
