  • IIRC the M71 was given all sorts of nasty names - Widowmaker, Suicide-pedal etc. so I assume it's a reasonably quirky bit of kit.
They pre-date bolt-on cleats so you'll need to get hold of leather, nylon or timber soled shoes and the cleats are enormous and sufficiently rare that you're not going to want to walk on them.
Other than that I've not doubt they're marvellous!!
If you want to cinelli-up some pedals you can also get those winged-C chromoplastic toestrap pulls.

  • Hey, could you make some pictures of the luggs? I wonder if this one has the same as mine.

Also, thanks Rik, I ordered a pair of those :)!

  • All the best-dressed pedals have toestrap pulls!
From what I can see the lugs aren't pierced, and he's also got the R pantographed in his fork crown.....

  • damn :(

  • True, this one has the Rs on the fork crown, and another on the rear bridge.
Cinelli BB shell, and quite plain-looking lugs up front and at the seat. They're not Cinelli ones, but they look similar... slightly longer and fatter spearpoints.
The top-eyes are quite short (they reach to roughly the centre of the top tube), and indented. Campagnolo dropouts, front and rear.

I'll put up some pictures later.

Sounds like the M71s are probably not a great plan, so I'll go with some Cinelli'd-up Campagnolo pedals. I'm liking the look of these, so far:

But I'm not so keen on the straps that go with them:

Or I could get new stuff, and have nicer (and more easily replaceable) straps: black, with red stitching!

I'd like to keep it period correct, so I'll probably end up going with the old stuff... Does anyone know if Cinelli did a black version of the Binda straps?

  • I've got M71s with cleats if you want them for the giggles. I think the problem is you have to manually release your feet.

  • That's right, it's the little lever at the front that you have to lean down an pull to release the cleat from the pedal

  • As in, stop riding and lean down to your shoe with srewdriver?
No wonder they're called Suicide Pedals...

    I think I'll give them a miss!

  • At least you don't need a screwdriver. They still sound shit though.

  • not a screwdriver, just the little black tab at the outer face/front edge of the pedal.
Not a crazy idea - if you use toestrap pulls and cleated shoes you often need to lean down and release the toestraps to get your foot out

  • I guess so... I've only ever used flat pedals or mtb cleats, so all this is new to me.
What's the deal with Binda straps, btw? Are they the only option for period correct Cinelli straps?

  • Cinelli bought-out Binda in the 50's so any period correct & cinelli'd up build will have Binda straps. The only other italian strap maker I can think of is Lapize (though they might be french).
Since all Binda straps are therefore Cinelli, you can basically take your pick!
    etc

  • Cheers Rik, Binda straps seem like the way to go then.

  • +1 for binda, reckon the blue would look great, pricy though..

I have some vegan lapize yellow ones that would match your yellow tape on my orrell currently, made of plastic which is weird, but work, PM if you want some pics, Im going to swap for black.

  • I've got blue Binda's on my L'Eroica rat, the leather is incredibly thick compared to Cristophe/Lapize, and the finish/texture is very impressive too, even in the ropey state mine are in.

  • That's right, it's the little lever at the front that you have to lean down an pull to release the cleat from the pedal

Thanks Ernest, I'd like to get black ones myself, so no worries.

Today I managed to get it into my head that what this build really needs is a pair of non-fluted campag cranks.
If I can find some in tip top condition, I reckon they'll be the ultimate finishing touch:

  • ^ Cheers!
Might hold out for one in better condition... but perhaps worth a punt if it stays cheap.
Are the unfluted versions usually more expensive as they're rarer, or a bit cheaper as they're not as well known? Trying to figure out what I should expect to pay for these things.

  • a decent pair went for £110 on here the other week, seller had fluted ones as well that only just went for the same price I think. reckon its likely that rarity will up demand, as they look amazing on the right build.

  • Yeah, I saw that... Will watch and learn about pricing... The rims and the saddle on this build both have nice minimal surfaces, and I think the smooth finish on those cranks will fit in well; hopefully this will be one of those builds: )
...Plus it's always good to have something slightly different when you're essentially just following the purist rulebook.

  • A small change of plan over the weekend. After a bit of a search, I managed to track down some NOS white Benotto tape from Jay75 (of this parish):

and put it on instead of the yellow stuff:

I think it looks a little better.

Campy oldy has some NOS cinelli bar plugs and some campag seat bolts, so these will be the next modest purchases... while I carry on looking (and saving) for a pair of those elusive cranks and some pedals.

  • that's very good looking

  • I'm a fan of flashy tape, but the sedate white is perfect.

  • when I had money, campyoldy had some white campag straps when I enquired for black ones... may work?

white tape is lovely, somehow makes the wheels look even nicer..
