• If I were to do something similar again I'd buy something like these http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/ProductImages.aspx?ProductId=153657&ProductImageId=8956

  • i had a pair like these.. but made with one piece of leather / stitching around the heel only, vibram sole.. lasted 12 years, bought in ellis bingham, covent garden

  • er, this is pretty challenging stuff, I assumed that people signing up would be competent hill baggers and therefore own a good pair of broken in boots.

Mine are on old but bloody good pair of Brasher Hillwalkers.

  • dolomite, brasher, scarpa.. all great brands for hillwalking boots

  • Guys the list seems to have been stopped being updated some time ago, does this mean that you still have spaces? Room for a small one? For what it is worth I am an experienced hill walker (having bagged 30 odd munros). what are the likely dates?

  • Nothing's arranged yet, so if you're interested jump on the list. I'd expect there to be a 99pc rate of attrition on this one. No likely dates yet, but this summer would be good. I know it's a rough thing to attempt, but it's not like we all need to do months and months of training...

I would never attempt to do anything like this NOT wearing boots. I wore hiking shoes (as opposed to boots) on a walking trip a few months ago and it was horrible. Boots give so much more support.

Ridiculously expensive (but that I got for free) anatom fleece-lined boots FTW.

  • Oh, and I have a code for 20% off at Cotswold if anyone's interested.

    Fucking small one my arse!

  • I've battened down a schedule, walking and cycling.

The journey will start mid-morning Thursday 05/07, with a train out to Llandudno. The 'physical bit' will take place from Thursday evening until Sunday evening. I've chosen the timings and direction because it greatly increases the chances of completing all of the climbs in daylight, and it makes the final day comparatively easy. The return train from Fort William is booked for Monday Morning.

Should anyone be up for it (or if anyone knows someone who might be) then drop me a note and we can go through everything in more detail. It's obviously late in the day for such a request, so I'll not hold my breath, but I'm aware that the trip might be better experienced with one or two others. I've now booked my own travel and hostel accommodation, but the locations are such that finding single beds should be possible for some time. Camping is also an option, which is too much for me; though as I write this I'm becoming tempted by a bivi bag.

All in all, organisation time is a little tight, but the opportunity seems entirely feasible.

  • Is this for a cycle + walk trip, or just walking?

  • Bugger, maybe that wasn't so clear. Sorry.

    I've adjusted my previous post.

  • Stupid question; where will you leave your bike when you walk up the hills?

  • Ben Nevis. Lock up outside Ben Nevis Inn
Snowdon. Lock up in the car park by the youth Hostel.
Scarfell. There are farms at the bottom that will probably let you use a shed.
All three are low crime spots where people on a trek leave kit unattended while they pop up to the summit to bag the peak.

  • Need to check dates with work before giving any commitment. Worse case scenario I will get the route post attempt and feedback for an attempt next June. Defo doing this within the next 13 months though.

  • No way am I ALSO cycling the 3 peaks. Hell no!

  • wait, what?

  • Sorry, I meant to say a big resounding NO to walking and cycling the 3 peaks! Good luck if you attempt it though, absolutely nuts...

I will get on with investigating prices/dates etc for just walking it this week, ran out of time last week.

  • I'm all about the walking at the moment.... off to do Porto - Santiago de Compostela in July so after that would be good.

  • you messed the list Kattiep... How?!!?

Special (and not been on the forum much so forgot how it all works)?

  • I've finally got on the case and started to investigate this. There are a few different minibus companies but essentially they all do the same thing - pick up at Glasgow airport, drive to Fort William, stay overnight there, all 3 peaks, then drop off at Chester for the train back to London. Costs are between £100-£150pp for this.

Ideally we need 12 people to make this make financial sense. Though if we had a much smaller group then I'm sure we could get a smaller van rather than having lots of empty seats.

So, we need to figure out dates. I've set up a doodle poll with potential weekends: http://www.doodle.com/t3swvd8kskhcbbxc I've just put in the saturday of each weekend, but obviously it would be the whole weekend...

  • ^poll completed. may edit soon though

  • Because you said yes to every date?!
