  • I'd love to walk up a hill in a park, in the dark, with a stranger. Let me know when you plan to it.

I know - tempting, right!? I promise not to hold a torch under my chin, blair witch style, too often...

I'll let you know when I plan to do it - not for a few weeks I'm afraid.

Get up here and lets do a practice weekend in the Peaks.
    Have OS map. Will navigate.

This sounds great, I’ve (shamefully) never been to the Peak District.

Hobo - would you be able to fill in the doodle poll so I can see about dates? Thanks!

  • This. I'll bring a flask of coffee, which won't be spiked with anything.

    Then I'm out.

  • Out cold...

  • Only way...

  • Doodle poll CB! Or Sparky won't get the chance to spike your drink.

  • What's a doodle poll?!?

  • The online poll thing upthread, to choose a date. You must have come across these before?!?

  • I've checked with the company that has an 8 seater coach (ie suitable for 7 people) and they have availability for the following 3 weekends:

    18/19 August
    8/9 Sept
    29/30 Sept

So far there are 5 people who (according to the poll) can do each of those dates. Do any of you know anyone else who’d like to join us? (Chainbreaker, are you going to fill in the poll or not?!)

Here’s the fun maths bit... all based on us being a group of seven.

The van would be £140 per person.

One-way flights from London to Glasgow for those dates are between £48 - £72 (cheaper in September than August).
Trains back (from Chester to London) are anything between £13 and £1m, thanks to the weird vaguaries of the train system in this country. Probably £25 though if we book in advance.

There are a range of hostels in Fort William, where we’d stay on the Friday night. We can get an 8 bed room for £100, between 7 of us that’d be £14.29 (yes I used a calculator).

So all in all, total costs would be between £216 - £252, depending on plane/train options.

I really think we should do this... Please find 2 more people to make this happen!

  • I think we should add in the cost of a congratulatory beer for Hats, having spent so much time looking in to this. Sounds good to me. Chain Breaker, stop having a cold and do your paperwork!

  • Fuck sake! I'm still at work! I'll do any of those though I do suggest the soonest one due to weather.

  • Fuck sake! I'm still at work!

Me too. But I'm less angry about it, seemingly.

    ;)

  • With regards to the van would it be cheaper just to hire one for the weekend and have one of us drive it?

  • With regards to the van would it be cheaper just to hire one for the weekend and have one of us drive it?

It couldn't be one of the walkers who drove, so it would rely on having someone come to drive. We'd probably then have to pay for their flight/train ticket, and we'd need to find a hire company that would let us drop off at the other end of the country. Could be done, but it's a lot more to arrange.

  • Do it the 8/9 Sept so I can make it!
    /selfishness
also weather is just as likely to be good then..

  • Ok, I think we need to book this. I'm going to be out of the country for a couple of weeks and not sure if I'll have internets. Does anyone else want to take over the organising?

  • I havent filled in my availability because I got a bit over-excited and forgot that summer doesn't actually contain enough time for me to be able to join in. :/ Maybe next year!

  • Ha, well I guess no one wants to organise this on my behalf. Does anyone have any objections if I book this? It'll be either the 18th Aug or 8th Sept. Not keen to have to pay for the whole minivan myself but I am keen to make this happen!!

  • Mebe it's a bit late in the day for brand new summer holiday ideas, but I'm going to have another bash at a 3 peaks walk/ cycle and I thought I'd see if anyone else fancies the trip.

Train/ cycle out to Snowdon on Saturday June 22nd for an evening start, arrive at the foot of Ben Nevis about 72 hours later. All in it's about 470 miles (and 3 mountains, obviously).

Last year I thought was bloody hard, but on the whole it was brill.

I'm already booked into hostels, which at the time of writing still have availability, but accommodation options are limited so I reckon that acting fast is key.

Drop me a note if you're interested and we'll take it from there.

  • Again- I'm in for an attempt later on in the summer...
Friday- that sounds great- but I'm away during those dates- have a great trip and good luck.
