  • Cheap Ti is likely to be heavier than steel as it will be plain gauge (from Mr Smiths old rants)

It might be heavier than 853, but it'll be lighter than 631. The plain gauge stuff is aerospace industry stuff they just cut to length. That saves a ton of money and they can still be really nice.

I was chatting to guy on a 200k ride a fortnight ago who was riding a ti Enigma and running it SS and 67gi. Lightweight wheels and 25c tyres. That was a pretty nice long distance / light(ish) setup.

    tl:dr

    Buy a Seta.

  • cranks are the lightest modern track cranks (incl bb, mdcc will correct me) and i won't a tubular rear wheel, so the ellipse was fine

  • I suspect there is a lot of weight in the cranks and rear wheel.

    Mavic Ellipse rear is >1kg

  • cranks are the only modern track cranks

Omniums weigh a fucking ton. Lovely crankset, but doesn't belong anywhere near a WW build.

Road cranks with a single ring are the way to go, SRAM Force is barely more expensive than Omniums and about 200g lighter.

  • Mavic Ellipse rear is >1kg

    For rim/hub/spokes?

Obviously it's a track wheel, but I'd want both wheels to add up to ~1kg for an outright lightweight build

  • Yes, complete wheel including nuts. 2055g for the pair for the Mk1 version, maybe just under 2kg for the current model

  • sure, road cranks are lighter, but i said track cranks with 144bcd.

@dammit: front 905g, pair 1895g (rim, hub, spokes, nipples, double fixed, nuts)

    Behold!

  • Meaty.

Campag pista cranks + BB are lighter than Omniums I think.

So there's a kilo that could be lost.

  • the 170mm campa pista version weighs 592 grams, 111mm campa track bb weighs 220g, omnium is 825 incl bb

  • Campag pista cranks + BB are lighter than Omniums I think.

I think all the square taper cranks (DA7600, Record, S75) are lighter than Omniums. TA Alize with the Axix Ti BB is probably the lightest true track set, but it's easy to find lighter by shopping in the road aisle.

  • it's all about the money

  • With a friendly machinist to alter the spider you could make some 144 bcd Hollowgram cranks that would come in at 470g with BB I would think

  • That Berk guy on WW is the chap that has made several of his own carbon frames right?

The 120gram seatpost and saddle combo is so rad..

  • it's all about the money

    +1

  • The Extralite QRC-2 weighs in at 458g without the chainrings.
The chainring, OctaRamp RC-2, weighs 94g
    552g in total

  • Plus BB?

    Heavy.

i think he's slovenian and yes, he's building quite a lot of stuff for himself.
but now he starts to take orders...

  • Plus BB?

    Heavy.

    integrated. Heavy?!!?!?

  • well, that's where I'd go. I remember his builds being pretty rad/light.

  • Frame - Dolan Seta
    Rims - Stans ZTR
    spokes - 20 radial Revolutions front, 28 2x CX-ray rear (or equivalent)
    front hub - cheap 65g no-brand jobbie
rear hub - novatech lowflange track
    stem and seatpost- KCNC Sc
    Saddle - SLR
Bars - chopped'n'flipped spincycles carbon bars
    tubes - michelin latex
tyres - Schwalbe ultremo 23mm front, 25mm rear
    Crankset - middleburn RS8 X-type

Thats by no means the lightest build. But it would'nt cost much, and should be comfortable. I'd be tempted to swap the front hub for something more solid. WW front hubs wear out pretty quick. Plus you may want 32 3x lacing on the rear. I'm 85Kg, and that wheelset is about my minimum.

  • Back in 2004 I built a bike for a similar requirement (hilly commute 40miles each way) - I went for a road frame, 42x16 (with a touch of a file on the rear dropout) - If I did it again I'd have an ENO
I know it's substantially less glam than the one we're talking about here but It weighed less than my race bike (De Rosa Al+) and was very fast and comfortable.

  • @SF
    Why Middleburn cranks?
Don't get me wrong, they're nice but the proprietary spider aspect isn't going to make for the lightest or stiffest chainset. The arms and axle alone are 548g).
