  • I'd cast a vote for a road frame with a White Industries Eno at the back.

    I am disappoint

Think of the precious grams of mech hanger, cable bosses...

  • Something like:

    SuperSix Evo frame
    Zipp 404 FC Tubular front
Zipp 404 Clydesdale tubular rear w. eccentric hub
Hollowgram SiSL cranks converted to single ring
Speedplay Nanogram pedals (or make your own for far less)
    3T Ltd finishing kit (bars/stem/seatpost)
    Lizard skins DSP tape
    SRAM S900 carbon levers
    KMC S10-SL chain
    Powercordz
    Front EE Cycleworks brake
Vittoria Evo 320 TPI tubs, glued.

That should be well under 5kg.

  • Plus Fizik K:1 saddle

    • RED

    ( amidoingitwrong? )

  • For long distance fixed rides I would look to comfort not weight saving. If it were for hill climbing races then weight may be more of a concern.

    ummmm

    how about both?

  • different bikes, different purposes

but for the hill climb you would want stiff and light, for the long distance rides too harsh a bike will just shake you to bits and cause a lot of fatigue (though well thought out tyre size and pressure would help alleviate this)

i would suggest twatanium, but i go for that with all my bikes

  • So then not a hill climb bike. I still want it to be light.

  • titanium, light but compliant - hence why proper track frames tend not to be made of it

  • If you want it for long distances then use a road frame, it'll beat you up a lot less than a track frame.

  • or a titanium fixed wheel frame, not really a track frame and will also not beat you up

  • Neil, Im trying to keep the theme of fixed frame. I dont like vertical dropouts.

What frames are there that have track drop outs that arent track geometry that are light?

A bespoke frame with so little knowledge may not be the answer though James.

  • there are a few companies making stock ti frames van nicholas, pretorius, charge did a plug in ti

  • If you want track ends on a non-track frame I suspect you will be looking at custom.

Maybe have a chat to Ryan at Oak cycles?

Cheap Ti is likely to be heavier than steel as it will be plain gauge (from Mr Smiths old rants)

  • Dolan Seta is built for comfort, put 25c tyres on it if you need any more plush. My T3 is stiff enough for world champions on the track, but still comfy enough for 50 mile TTs. 90% of the suspension travel on a road/track bike is in the tyres (unless you get one of those new Fred-bikes like a Spec Roubaix or Trek Domane)

  • Give us some targets Iain- cost and weight would be useful.

  • Why is it when I say I should have thicker tyres, I get poopooed. Now I should ride thicker tyres...

Neil, I don't know what my parameters are at the moment. But the friendly discussion is eye opening:-)

  • think about clinchers or tubular tires, there's plenty of weight you can save, but also of money you can spend

  • Light is expensive.

For example the 3T stem/seatpost and bars I specified on the theoretical build above have a total cost of around £600 just for those components.

My target was 6.8kg, so everything I bought was with that in mind.

  • Well, I think im happy buying extralite stem for £150 and so on. I don't know what a light fixed bikes weighs as not many people have tried and documented it.

  • If you are happy to go all out and spend like a drunken sailor on shore leave then speak to Berk on WW.

He'll put together a custom carbon bike to your specifications, for the right price.

  • My 6.46kg set-up

    Frame: Dolan Seta / 58cm / 2012
Fork/Headset: No name carbon/alu road fork / FSA Orbit CE Plus
    Crankset/Bottom Bracket: SRAM Omnium Track 2012 (170mm)
    Pedals: Shimano XTR
    Drivetrain/Cog/Chainring/Chain: 48 x 18 (BLB), Miche Pista
    Handlebars/Stem: Syntace Stratos 200 / Syntace F139 (120mm)
Saddle/Seatpost: Evo Full Carbon / Xtreme Carbon
Brakes: Planet X Ultra Light Forged with SwissStop / Sram TT 900 lever
Front Wheel/Hub/Tire: Fast Forward F5R tubular / Continental Sprinter
Rear Wheel/Hub/Tire: Mavic Ellipse 2011 / Continental Force
    Frame weight: 1.14kg // Fork weight: 0.41kg (27cm tube)

A lot of space left, but i want it still ridable and there are parts which i won't changed, as they fit me well (bullhorn and stem) and as it gets then to expensive

    oh yes, seat+seatpost (one piece) = 120g!!!

Not very helpful... You asked my price range- I didn't say I want to go spending like a drunken sailor.

    Interesting!

  • I don't know what a light fixed bikes weighs

If I just took the dérailleurs and 9 of the sprockets off my 585, it would be under 6kg as a singlespeed with 2 brakes. Very rapidly diminishing returns for your cash after that though, you're probably at the £1 spent per 1g saved level at 6kg, and it just gets worse from there.

  • Be interested in the weights of some of those parts on Eingang's Dolan- I suspect there is a lot of weight in the cranks and rear wheel.

As it stands it's 100g lighter than my road bike.
