im resistant to Goldtec as i have a pair...
I was sold on the fact that everyone thought they were bomb proof.
What i got was rounded bolts (allen key version) that forced me to crimp the casing to get them off and a slight wobble in the rear that has caused every mechanic who looks at it to tell me that my bearings are shot even though the first time I heard it I hadnt ridden more than 5 miles. (Goldtec said nothing to worry about.)

Have you considered the orient express route? Farsports will build you carbon track clincher to any spec you ask for. I was very happy with their product personally.

Just get a slightly deeper section rim? say 38mm or even 50mm. Carbon isnt as fragile as everyone seems to think it is.

super light super safe?

exactly all these points, thoughts and discussions forth and back and my misleading knowledge about wheel- and axle building brought me to the point were i decided to keep the heavy but city proofed ellipse wheel set. good luck with finding the "right" decision soon CB.

Just base your spoke count and rim depth on your weight.
24/20 on a 50mm
28/24 on a 38mm
32/28 on a 24mmProbably optimal to get a 50mm rear with 24 spokes, and a 38mm front with 20. Would be better on windy days than a 50mm front perhaps.
If farsports can do you a light hub pair in these drillings.

Meh. You cant weight that much more than OSR surely. And he is quite happily doing steep descents at 45mph on his PX wheels, which are the same as orient express wheels anyway.
-
• #1586
Those are PX wheels, not Orient Express wheels...

OSR is a mere slip of a lad in comparison to the biltong-fuelled, protein-shaken lump that is ChainBreaker...

They are made in the same place by the same people
i think
the wheels that is. Not trying to imply that OSR and CB have the same parents and were conceived in china.

I would not want to test this theory of yours out... -

The PX rims are the same as one of the orient express options. When you look at the Farsports price list, there are quite a few options in 50mm. I'd assume the cheapest, heaviest ones may be the strongest but until someone tests the lot of them side-by-side we'll never know for sure.

Get tubs, and you wont need to worry about bead locks blowing out, through tyre pressure and/or braking heat.
Get a depth, and spoke count, that wont require massive spoke tension, causing cracking around the drillings.
Then you'll be sweet.
I have a dodgy combination of relatively high tensioned spokes, on orient express carbon clincher rims, and am not dead. So its fine.
I will PM you the second they kill me.

You know sometimes i do wonder...

But yeah, i would not worry about PX wheels and tubs. Mine may have only been ridden for maybe 500 miles tops so far but I have not been kind to them, used them in the wet several times and smashed potholes harder than i would have liked and they are bang on true and show no signs of breaking any time soon.
I do however think that 101/82mm rim depths contribute massively towards this, they are stiffer than Hovis when he smells a Thai ladyboy.

lol!
Why dont you just buy a pair of PX carbon rims in 50mm, a light road hub, and some spokes and get the front sorted while you work on the rear.
Personally I'd just get Goldtec to do me a 24 hole version of their flashy rear track hub. Its probably going cost way less than 100g over a complicated MTB front solution.
