People need to learn how to try out new tactics and challenge the status quo. Auto-qualifying any team based on past performance is pretty weak... where's your sense of competition? How about we just give the Euros trophy to L'Equipe now?

That's not an entirely fair comparison though, I think it would be reasonable to give last years European Champions an automatic spot at the Euros, as is the custom in almost every other sport.

Extending an argument to it's illogical extreme doesn't make the original point less valid Jono, although it is fun and something i do a lot.

The answer is simple, I'm not saying the three teams I mentioned would come top of the qualifying (in fact I'd say at least one scene has at least one team if not two who either have already broken the status quo or are in the process of bending it past breaking point), but I don't think anyone can argue that these three London teams won't qualify.

Generally the really good teams play as many tourneys as possible qualifying for something or not.

Actually from what ive read is any team asking for a bye?? Why remove any top team from competing in a qualification by giving them a bye...?

Until an 'NA style' regional process is adopted, the best way to make the qualification fair is to make sure each team has enough court time and that the court conditions etc... are up to standard.

In those terms, yes, it's madness, but the issue is how tournament formats affect the rankings of lower placed teams.

If SB, NT, DR and Cosmic all play and qualify as expected, but there are 4 too many teams to do round robin, and hence you go with Swiss, then it will be pretty unfair on the 11th place team. Right?

What if any one of those teams is no longer good enough to be sent to the Euros (through injury, a falling out, lack of progression, bike failure, they haven't played polo in months, etc)?

Let me take the horse and place it before the cart for a second.

If the actual problem is about getting an accurate ranking of teams, then perhaps we should consider the French approach, or ensuring that the qualification tournament is a two day event? Where did the spot allocation thing come from and why is it being pushed under the agenda of "this is how we will achieve a fair Euros Qualification process"?

Do those "top" teams even want to be given spots automatically? What happens if they refuse them? What happens if the additional spots are filled by teams that rank just beneath the previous cut off point? Who decides who can play and who can't?

Anyway, no transfers, if these teams don't want them the spaces don't go to the next team it would defeat the purpose.

A more interesting way of putting the same question is what if the NS fals out of favour and the top teams don't take part, so the top three teams are actually rubbish...
