  • Any idea how i go about slamming the Acros headset on a Canyon?

  • Join the club ;)

  • There seem to be two versions, one (726) which looks pretty well slammed to start with and one (727) where one of my covers could replace the Ringo-Star style preloader to get some extra slam, but you'd then need a preloader on top of the stem like the normal AHeadset

  • Hmm, hadn't seen the first version at all. Reading up on it, it sounds like its a standard headset used with their mountain-bikes. And would be used with a normal pre-loader, as opposed to the road one which is the second, and most definitely not slammed.

The translation of abdeckkappe is covering cap, which sounds like it is just a cover and not a fancy pre-loader

  • Also, my first idea for a bodged shim was a Shimano cassette shim (the one that goes after between a 9spd cassette and the hub?).

The centre hole is larger than the steerer, but it covers half of the compression ring, and is 1 mm deep, so should (might?) do the job?

  • I've got some 0.4mm thick stainless steel shims in that size, i.e. 1.375" internal diameter, if you want something a bit thinner than the 1mm thick cassette spacer.

  • That would be ace, thanks. Would probably take 2 just to be on the safe side.

So now I just need to find an expander that will fit?

(tried a 1 1/8th one that I have on my other bike, but it looks like it will concentrate the load all at one point which is a bit rubbish)

  • Shims are £4 each, that's what they cost to have made.

Obviously the tarty way to sort out the prelaod adjuster is with one of my top caps and a custom bonded-in nut, but as both would be one-offs to suit your weird steerer, that kind of thing gets expensive. If Kompute has the same fork and wants one too, it would help with the unit cost :-)

  • Ha, always be closing !

Will have a think about that.

  • Mine is an Aeroroad so may not be the same fork, when you say "expensive" how much we talking?

  • I'd be disappointed if I couldn't get 2 sets (caps + bungs) done for £40 machining cost, then there's material, engraving/etching, anodising, screw and shipping to add on to that, so about £40 total per set (cap+screw+bung+cover). If you're both interested at that sort of price, I can firm it up with the machinist. Shims extra, but if you both need a couple I'll need to get more made, in which case I can get them done in the correct size.

  • I'd definitely consider it if Branwen is also interested. I guess costs would also go down significantly if we could get just one or 2 more who wanted them? I know a few lads in the club with Canyons so will ask about.

  • How would one go about epoxy-ing the bung in? LBS? Or is it something anyone should be able to do?

Sounds tempting, considering £12 for the cap, and ~£15 for an expander on its own anyway

  • I guess costs would also go down significantly if we could get just one or 2 more who wanted them?

    Yes, the more the merrier

How would one go about epoxy-ing the bung in?

    Araldite Fusion

  • ^ Sets in Seconds.
I can see that going so wrong

  • You can use a slower curing one if you like, but as long as you get yourself prepared the 90s working time is plenty.

  • Oh. so actually sets in a minute and a half. That sounds manageable. I was thinking more super-glue style

    6. ydog 47/2.5/1/black
    7. Branwen 49/2/1/black (31.75 mm steerer tube)

Any more for any more? TM & Scunny, need sizes. Kompute, do you want one the same as Branwen's? I'll get a quote for the 1.25" top caps and bungs this week, but I'll need the exact bore diameter of the fork before I can get them made.

Also, payment of £10 each by the end of this week would be nice, so that I can get started.
