  • Thanks sparky. It looks too small to be any use! i'm obviously very wrong there tho. I'm undecided what to go for

By all accounts it packs quite a punch. We'll see. I've got a headlamp which I'll use for a couple of hours until it gets really dark, then break this bad boy out and hope it lasts until dawn. Anyone know where I can pick up a cheap set of second batteries for it?

  • Hey all.
What's the latest time folks depart London Fields? I'm working until around 10 but going to catch up. I don't know the east's roads so directions out into the suburbs would be appreciated if I am to get lost!

Left at 10:30 last year - think I was the last person out, but you can still get the directions sheet to get out of town. Picked up a couple of lost stragglers in London then caught the back of the main ride at Epping. Nice time to ride, felt less like a sportive.

Exposure Spark seems to be £71 at Evans...

  • Cheers balmain. A direction sheet should make thinks easier!

  • Balls, looks like I will need coach tickets after all. If anyone has two coach tickets for sale drop me a pm

One ticket sorted, need one more if any are going spare.

Online, Maplins want 6.99 a battery. I can see a downside to this light now.

  • Looks like I'm going to use my coach ticket after all.

Think I might bring a wad of bubblewrap to stop the paint getting scratched...

Also thinking about some kind of bbq and a couple of mackerel...

  • Sorry Skulls, I can't make Dunwich. Too short notice (off my radar this year).

  • Also thinking about some kind of bbq and a couple of mackerel...

Wrap the mackerel in foil, put one in each jersey pocket, maintain 15 mph plus average...

Poached mackerel breakfast on the beach with every cat in Suffolk for company.

  • ...and zero wheelsuckers!

I'm thinking I'll take the benotto for it's hardiness and carry capacity, most ikely I'll coach home.

Can I do a gammon in a similar fashion if I take a big enough water bottle?

You get one set with it, and the charger, so not too bad. Will try and get a second set before Saturday but if not I've got headlamp and one set, so should be ok. Did you buy it in the end as well?

  • I have 48 x 18 on my other bike, which I believe, if Sheldon is correct, is 70.1 GI. Which is just way too spinny for 20 miles, well it was for me anyway. I didn't feel comfortable. 48 x 16 is starting to hurt my knees a little bit with that mileage, hence 48 x 17. Like I say, will see how it goes first. I do know you're right by the way - I am just being stubborn.

I usually ride 48/14 but will be riding 48/17 for this as well. Should be fine. I rode Swansea-Bristol-London last summer which was 100 miles followed by 130 miles across two days. I rode with 44/15 on a crappy beater and that was bearable. But now I'm a lot stronger and don't have a (completely) shit bike. The slightly smaller gear should help too!

  • Yeah, I have the slicks, and at 90psi, so I'm good there.

And taking the advice on the gear inches, going to go a bit bigger at the front and be up to 62 gear inches, which should be a bit better, no?

I appreciate the advice re. getting up to 65 or so, but I still feel like I should aim low, so I can still get up the hills (slopes?) without killing myself.

I was just thinking of my failsafe idea of taking backup disposable batteries with me on the ride.

I haven't bought it yet, I'm broke as hell this month - new car - and I'm spending my last pounds on a much needed service/investigation on my bike by the LBS. Friday is payday though so will pound the account with a few last minute purchases, light, few energy bars, new bottle cages (all of mine have sheared), and extra tube.

If you replace the chamois in your bibs with a nice thick gammon steak it'll be beautifully slow cooked, tenderised and marinated after 100 miles.

  • I've been making my Dolan DD ready. Re tightened the headset after hitting a massive pothole, tightened the cranks, new tyres, narrower handlebars, duct taped bottle cage to seatpost (way too high up, can only just fit a bottle in). I'm doing it on 48-18, 72gi. Can't remember what I did it on last year, I think it was that same. Dug out my old Cree light that died and it seems to be working again, which is nice. Going to attach a bottle cage to my seatpost and have my tool wrap on my saddle but I want some kind of frame bag, maybe handlebar bag for food.

where do you carry the pineapple rings?

  • Guys, really really appreciated all the responses to my gear inches question. I just checked and I am running 32/14 (not 32/16) with 700 x 42 mm (27.5 inches) tyres, so I am at about 63 gi where I am, and there is a 34 tooth chainring in my hand which will take me to 67 gi. I think that is high enough for me.

I can always put the 32 teeth chainring and an allen key in my bag for a "gear change" should I need it :-)

I guess the point is, I am happy to hear that plenty other people are there with single speed - but yeah, I would have been spinning crazily at 55 gi.

See you on the ride guys.

  • ^ Did you buy the bike mount to go with it?
of course.. and probably carry a ton of D batteries

  • andrew, i'll be running 48x18... single speed and a really annoying clicky (halo/shimano) freehub to keep y'all awake throught the night..

  • Al, can I count on you for a garmin with the-way-to-get-back route loaded up on it? Even if you decide to coach it back we could work something out where I 'borrow' it or something?

Yeah, I'm taking it easy until payday now. [sheepish grin]
