  • You're bringing the 29er aren't you?

  • Rideable with slicks?

  • I only have slicks - don't mind a bit of mud - but mud + dark + towpaths ≠ happy riding in my book

  • It's less the towpaths and more the opportunity it presents to feature here

  • Good idea. I am all in favour of riding the pafh back to Hackney Wick and have a look at he Olympics. Allegedly there was a massive puddle under the North Circular flyover. And we can rename this ride Ikea to the Olympics.

  • Matt, I had the choice between the 29er, the 'cross bike and the phicksie with 23mm slicks and 75gi.

I keep breaking bones on the 29er and 'cross bike so I chose the phicksie as that seems to be my safest bike.

  • It's less the towpaths and more the opportunity it presents to feature here

That's exactly where my thoughts were going ...

  • Mudguards are actually of.

  • Avoid the pothole path by the A104, Avey Lane, single file on the B195 to Lower Nazeing, loop around the lions, Wharf road to the canal, Gunpowder Park, Mott Street, Lipitts, Bury Lane.

Buck's Alley is the sketchy bit where we better be careful.

  • If I were doing the ride, which I'm not, I wouldn't be doing the Killing Me Soft Lea (or Lee) route at the moment.

    i) Drainage on the last forest segment isn't that great - it's been raining heavily for months, remember?

ii) Dampness on the raised metal sections on the towpath e.g. the sort of humpback bridge over an adjoining whatsit could be pretty fucking lethal if you touch your brakes.

Those would be my main reasons. Other bits could be a bit boggy. It works best when it's been bone dry for a while, on a road bike at least.

Certain versions of the route that are available online won't be accurate, as I drew some of it due to working out the route from Enfield Island Village to Mott St by using aerial photographs and my memory.

Do what you want, but where there's uncertainty about riding conditions relative to the type of bike, I usually don't drag newbs, inexperienced riders, or 'new club members' into the unknown. I'd take the safe option, or do a reccy no earlier than a week before the scheduled ride, and consider the weather in the meantime.

  • The route's a lot of fun when it's dry, dusty, and you hit it at tempo. I'm hoping to get a chance to ride it that way towards the end of August…

  • what is the route??
I thought we were cycling on roads!?

  • I take onboard BMMFs fair and wise words, we'll hit the E4 route instead and keep to the roads. Same train, same place, same time.

  • Perfect - am riding out, see you at Chingford station at about 7.45.

  • All in all a wise decision I think.

  • Riding out too, but probably not a useful route for anyone to tag along. Be at Chingford @ 1945

  • Sweet, so meet at chingford at 7.45pm, bring my fixie biek and sandwiches
    EDIT: answered above

    finish at chingford station also?

Sorry for the derpy questions just want to double check

  • start and finish at Chingford, easily ridebackable

gutted softLad Benjam has vetoed doing softLea, I was looking forward to watching him fishing his Benotto out of the canal after an inevitable crash.

  • Tawney Common is probably worse then anything on the canal.

  • Owls, nobody mentioned owls. Evil buggers that they are.

  • will be a couple of mins late mayyybee
