  • nice job stripping the frame, are you going to strip the fork as well?

  • My front wheel is / was a Halo Aerorage. Not preferable.

Cheers! They're carbon, so I probably won't. Too risky to strip, really! Would be better off just buying different colour forks if that was my goal. But maybe if I'm bored and have spare time one day and I feel like fucking about with my bike then yes.

  • I've made some changes. Syntace Racelite 7075 drops for insane weight savings and commuting comfort. Carbon seatpost for insane weight savings and slight commuting comfort gains. Planet X Model B front wheel for insane weight savings and...

I'm sticking with the small, webcam pictures because they make the bike look less ugly.

  • Here's the bike built up. Didn't touch the forks. I was too worried about screwing them up. Stripped it with airplane paint stripper (cool because it's Columbus airplane tubing) and wire wool. It took a lot of elbow grease at some points. Went over it roughly with some Scotchbrite at the end. I think it looks nice.I hope I saved face by keeping the smile on the BB...

Oh, and that stem was only temporary to go out riding.

    That looks absolutely awful

  • Isn't meant to LOOK good.

  • Thank fuck then

  • Isn't meant to LOOK good.

Then why go to the bother of stripping the paint?

  • insane weight savings

    .

  • Insane weight savings and commuting comfort gains (slightly more flex in the frame due to the lack of structural support from paint).

  • slightly more flex in the frame due to the lack of structural support from paint.

  • Insane weight savings

Y'know I realised no one asked this yet, but have you weight your bike?

  • I haven't got an accurate scale. Measured it on weighing scales with me on them and then with me and the bike on them and then deducted my body weight from the second reading. With the brake, computer attachments and light brackets it comes in at 8.0kg (to the nearest 100g). There are inaccuracies due to the method of measurement though. Would be nice to get a proper measurement of it.

On a side note - going clipless at the weekend. Should up the efficiency of the bike/me. As long as I don't crash and render myself useless...

  • With your new updates your only 2 steps away from a nice, normal bike.

    1. Strip the fork.
    2. Normal chain.
    1. better pedals

but still far away from a light bike

  • Once I destroy this chain I will get another one which will most likely not be a horrible pink colour. If you had read the previous posts you would have seen that I only got pink because it was over £10 cheaper than the other colours of the same model.

No point in stripping the forks just to change the colour of them. Too risky and might as well sell them and buy some different ones.

I just said I was getting new pedals this weekend.

This is a lot lighter than my previous bikes I've had. I never claimed it to be insanely light but it definitely is light.

  • A chain is about 10 euros... so 8 pounds.. If you strip the forks, you don't have to buy different ones ;)

  • I'm intrigued to know when a bike becomes so light that it is deemed 'insane'....

  • With the brake, computer attachments and light brackets it comes in at 8.0kg

which is 0.14kg lighter than my Dolan and I didn't even try hard (it is a very heavy frame at 1800kg).

If you want to save serious weight - start at the wheels.

  • My frame with fork is only 1.3kg. Ed, 1800kg seems a bit much :p

  • all those spacers and racks are heavy

  • which is 0.14kg lighter than my Dolan and I didn't even try hard (it is a very heavy frame at 1800kg).

If you want to save serious weight - start at the wheels.

+1. Talk about form over aesthetics but then deep section wheels?

  • HA! The front wheel is 700g (without skewer) and isn't that deep at all. The rear is a Mavic Open Pro rim which is not a deep section wheel.

Form? You mean weight? A deep section wheel is superior to a shallow rim for aerodynamics (from the front) but is usually heavier so it is a balancing act between the two. If you can get a light, deep rim then that is the best for 'form'. Unfortunately I can't afford carbon rims. :)

  • But you can afford a vigorelli.. sure.

  • It wasn't bought new. :)

  • My frame with fork is only 1.3kg. Ed, 1800kg seems a bit much :p

it is, cheap alu track frame weight roughly that much, or a cheap Eastern knock-off weight a modest 2.2kg frame-only (Visp)

The Cinelli Vigorelli's frame weight 400g less than mine (1.4kg).

It's a bit strange how identical the Cinelli and Dolan weight together, if 8kg is something to go by.
