this is the same day as back in black at the velodrome and i am going to that... it is a shame as i fancied this.
-
• #78
what ratio you doing it on velocio?
31:17 for 52.9 gear inches.
Spinny on the roads, tough on the hills, slippy on the wet and mud, just about right for bridleways and fields.

Wahey all decided, IN. I will try not to slow down the whippets on the cross bikes too much on my heavy, flat pedalled, full suspension brick.
Have some spds you can borrow if you like, as long as you carry the pedal spanner.

Once we've got to brighton and had a pint, I might tootle along the south downs way to petersfield if anyone fancies it.

Cheers William, perhaps that was an omen, I was in the pack and then gone in the blink of an eye.

Thanks for the offer but I prefer flats on my mountain bike and have always been a masher so I'll be fine, I'll just have to do some World Cup Downhill descending to catch you all up again.

Bumpity bump, is this still going ahead? I'm still in, everyone else?
Did we agree 9am at Waterloo, train to Dorking then go from there, beer and chips in Brighton and then train back? Groupsaves all round hopefully.
Who has a satnav then so we can follow them as it looks the kind of route with little or no markers?
And final question, as this is a ride in the wilds are people taking all their food and drink supplies with them or are there any villages/towns on route that we can detour into for supplies?
I don't mind which we do but as stated above I've no satnav and a Hippy-esque sense of direction. Much as I love the outdoors I'm keen to avoid a Bear Grylls type scenario of hunting down wild animals, scavenging carrion and drinking own piss.

Still in, I've got GPS and will program the route (as well as sharing it here so others program theirs in case my battery goes or something).
I think it's easier to say: Start at Dorking Station at 10am.
Rather than have people turn up late at Waterloo without a train ticket and all that... you've got to arrive by 10am, so sort yourself out as to how you achieve that.
I'm still quite tempted to ride from Kew and just start at the crack of dawn. My only fear is that with 51 gear inches I'll be knackered by early afternoon, especially if you lot are enjoying your gears.
-
• #91
At all costs Velocio, you must not be knackered. The crack of dawn is a little ambitious. You must set off at midnight and have a little doze at Stoke D'Abernon.

all i've got that sounds semi suitable is a geared mountain bike
will it be too much for this ride?
edit: fuck it.

I will probably also be on a geared 26" hardtail if I make it, in case you think you will feel like some kind of loser
-
• #94
haha its not that, just not sure if the fat tyres will tire me out substantially more than the thinner CX bikes
-
• #95
The 29ers are all fat tyres.
-
• #96
29er not in stock so will be on CX. All I need do now is decide on tyre choice and optimum pressure. That's at least a weeks worth of deliberation tight there.
-
• #97
50c tyres at 70psi. this will be fun.

• #98
bring a pump and plenty of Werther's

I will be setting off from Norwood at 7am and riding to Dorking, done it many times on the way to the isle of wight/west sussex.
Will be carrying 2 litres of drink, cereal bars, nuts, bananas, compass. Stops for food are time consuming, we will have to leave the trail to find shops etc. Depending when we hit Brighton, I might hit the South Downs Way from there and head west towards Midhurst. Anyone who feels like taking in some of the best views and trails in the south east is welcome to join me. x
