I really need to invest in a new bike. I only have my beater. My dad has an old GT mountain bike frame that'll do i suppose

This sounds fun, not ridden off-road since I was about 12.
Don't have a mtb, cx or 29er. Would it be insane of me to strip the racks, guards and other unecessary tat off my LHT and whack some cheap cx tyres on? I can't imagine d/t shifters are ideal off road but thems the breaks... -

I've only got a SS 29er; that's all I'll be doing it on.

We're now onto picking a date, I offer a Doodle to determine which day/weekend most of us can do:
http://www.doodle.com/3c8ipdz9zn3tdq9x
Whatever that says come next Friday (16th March) is what we'll go with.
When you add your preference to that, indicate in the name field the type of bike you're riding too.
The route will be as per post #1, but Dorking to Brighton, with the end destination in Brighton being the Fortune of War pub down on Brighton beach so that we can get a beer at the end and chips from next door.

Oh, and I explicitly missed out the Easter weekend. There's enough other stuff happening and people will be away, etc.

Sounds like fun to me. Another on a Pompino, singlespeed, praps fixed if I'm feeling brave.

Looks like April 14th on doodle so far. Can't wait. I'll be on a geared cross.
p.s. Is anyone doing the whole thing, i.e not getting the train? It would feel like more of an adventure to go all the way I think. Also, is this open to non-formerungers? My cousin Tom might like to come. He rides an on-one inbred.

Open to anyone who turns up on a bike made for off-road and who can ride the distance.
That probably rules me out. All the gear, no idea.

Tom and I did the south downs way in a day last year. He'll be fine ;)

how offroad-y is the route?
I've not yet reccy'd it, but word from people having done it is that it's not extremely off-road, that CX bikes would be fine, and that there a few notable hills but nothing impossible.
