  • Which saddle would you have gone for? The Rolls felt suitable because of the colour scheme, matching the red and gold of the Roberts decals. Main reason for my choice.

Made sure the cables were a good length, might not be able to tell from the photo. Hopefully they are ok anyway.

  • Front end Cable Runs:

    Too short?

  • Nah, they look ok. Just the angle.

I don't like Rolls. I know it's a retro build but I like shallower saddles (for looks) and SLRs for arse interfacing. I can't find an example since they probably don't exist. Chopped Brooks maybe (but I don't like them either).

  • There's lots of NOS looking bits here.. can I ask how much this has cost so far?

  • I did consider the regal, I actually bought one off a fellow forumer, but the condition it was in when I received it meant I needed to send it back.

I'll just have a think and I'll PM you.

  • hippy, that regal is nasty.... looks tacky if your ask me... Rolls looks 10x better and is comfortable...

  • White Regals look awful with the copper rivets & rails. Ti version FTW, although they have started making the regular cro-mo one with a silver finish. (I have one, actually, but it's far too knackered to be anywhere near a build like this...)

  • that's just stunning hunterlar, i had doubts the shamals would work with this frame but they do, great. only slight niggle would be rear cable routing around saddle

  • Brooks works well, it wears in and just compliments older bikes better than newer tape. Sure, the hipsters run it, but rarely can a hipster afford the kit on here, so you live in happiness.

    great build sir, tasteful.

  • It looks stunning.
To my mind the rear wheel ought to come forward in the dropouts a tad to reduce the gap to the rear wheel.
Other than that its a fantastic effort.
This is the first Roberts respray I have seen with the old style decals done properly.

  • Bloody lovely. I think sometimes Shamals can look a little too flashy on a lot of builds but this works beautifully, even the low spoke count gives it a sort of minimalist elegance. The whole thing just looks really clean. I did also wonder about the drive-side rear cable routing though.

Re: saddle, I don't like the rivets on the Regal and I personally find the Rolls a tad too chunky. Not sure if there is any period-correct compromise? I'm getting a Fizik Arione for my Ron Cooper, modern but kind of subtle enough. Hasn't got shit loads of massive logos all over it anyway. But the Rolls still does look classy. :)

  • I'd have another attempt at wrapping the bar tape around the shifters. Perhaps another wrap before going over the shifter placement.

    Other than that, stunning.

  • A good compromise saddle wise would be a white rolls due. I think the regular rolls looks spot on though.

  • Looks really great – with Argos do they source the decals?

  • looks awesome, i'm jelly. seeing it built has made me realise that its actually quite a small bike.

hope you dont mind, but i'l embed a larger image for you

  • Awesome - Brooks tape looks good, though i would bin the cork bar stops and find some silve or white campag ones.

Saddle looks awesome on there, and i am not usually a fan

  • Thanks spotter.

@Vinylvillain, the cork bar stops are temporary, as they are known to fall out. Waiting on some Hope Grip Doctor plugs which are silver.

  • Beautiful.

Now can you improve things by taking a photo with a nice background rather that the beige carpet/magnolia woodchip backdrop it has now :-)

  • Cycling rules are that it has to be in front of a white garage door, no?

  • @Pistoffski. The rear brake cable routing was a bit wierd, as the toptube guides run more on the driveside, so the brake housing has to then loop back across to the other side to go into the brake. The photo probably makes it look worse. I could trim 2cm off maybe. And corks will be coming off as soon as the Hope Doctors arrive.

@Glowboy. Yes they source them for you if you ask nicely, but you can supply your own as well.

I'll see what I can do about a nice background!

  • When are you going to sell it, now it's built?

  • Bloody lovely. Vicarious project enjoyment on this thread. Well done!

  • Thanks for the lovely comments.

Took the awful decals off the spare wheelset and put them on as a mock up ( note no cassette). Looks ok but would have preferred all silver rims.

  • I didn't realise the frame was so small either. Personally I don't get on with Rolls and find them uncomfortable - I don't like white saddles either. I think it's too chunky for the size of the bike, but none of this is my business. I'd be after something sleeker and less visible were it mine, which sadly it isn't.

    Lovely bike.

  • Fantastic build .. It looks gorgeous with the Shamal's
