do you setup different heart rate zones for cycling and running, surelly they can't be the same?
-
• #2681
it's based on max hr so they're the same. it's the body's response to the effort so wouldn't need to be different would it? exertion would obviously be different between the sports to get into the same zone though.

Yep, you are using a lot more of the body when running (is my non-scientific take on it) so the HR is generally higher.
However, threshold is still threshold- once I hit 185 bpm running I have to slow down as I get chest pains as if I have a belt being tightened around my lower ribs.
That said I can sustain 185 on the bike if seated, and having spun into it (such as on a long climb), but not if I hit it rapidly.
Which (as I type this) has lead me to wonder if I ramped slowly I could sustain 185 when running- I've hit it before when sprinting up long hills.
Hmm.

Seriously?

Been reading about this, and the theory I gave on the running thread is correct.
You employ more muscles running, as you are supporting you bodies weight. Thus your heart needs to pump more blood. So it is often the weakest link when running. Thus HR on runs will be high.
When cycling, as the strain is limited to fewer muscles. Lactic threshold is often the limting factor. So generally your HR will be lower for a percieved effort.
You should be able to sustain the 185 bpm when runnning in theory. But in reality it feels more uncomfortable. I think this might be related to the speed HR can increase when running. Making 185 feel closer to the edge than it does when cycling. Like its less controlled.

Found a nice running segment on Newyears day. The 418 step climb up to the city's most popular veiwpoint.
Thats going to be a fun one to compete in.

I raise ya,
http://app.strava.com/activities/97639063Its the same run I got 385 on the other day, but I clearly wasn't pushing myself as hard this time...
I'm pretty sure that's the best I've got, so I'm actually going to have to get off my arse and do something!
I'd love to run the whole SW coast path, although probably just the cornish bit as 630 miles sounds a bit mental!

Why would a random from Tokyo add me and start giving me kudos for not particularly epic running activities?
Is this the start of some sophisticated spamming I am not yet clued up on...

It's worse than that...

I hadn't heard of that before. It's fun. I need to vary where I ride more!

JB what's the ride that took you down past Alton?
-
• #2698
Dammit, that was the 'Evans Woking RideIt!' It was a really nice ride actually. It was the first 'long' solo ride I'd done and was around 92 miles I think. IIRC I struggled on the few hills that there were, but that was because it was one of the first rides I'd done with gears. Let me dig out the .gpx for you.

Before we list the many stalking/surveilance/crime/employment related reasons, can you offer some reasons why users should use real names on Strava?
Appropriate username is...
Well, inappropriate username is inappropriate.
Yeah, I don't want my name broadcast. Even on this forum I hesitate to use it.
