  • from my point of view, it is a matter of mental strength, every tom, billy and john can climb/downhill will a coaster. there is just a few people who are willing to push theirselves beyond the limits.

Riding fixed uphill is much easier than riding uphill in the same ratio singlespeed with a freewheel as the pedal stroke is assisted..

Bit of a stupid argument really anyway. Fixed is great for some things, gears are better for other stuff.

  • Oh my phone did something weird there

  • .

  • Fixed is better than singlespeed for climbing, granted, but it's not as good as gears. Being able to vary your gearing in relation to the climb is far more important than having a bit of inertia through the dead spots. If you're loosing power through the deadspots when you're climbing, you're doing something wrong or you're going much too slowly.

I was talking specifically about fixed vs freewheel as Marc was talking about coaster hubs not gears.

I do enough riding to understand to benefits of gears. I pretty much only ride fixed at the track these days because of knee issues, but I still enjoy looking at bikes etc. I don't understand why people are so prescriptive, a derailleur isn't some kind political stance, it's just practical.

    Bang on.

People screeching that they'll never ride gears or whatever sound like children. It's a pushbike, ride whatever you want, but don't act like you're making some grand moral point about it because absolutely no-one cares.

But mate, riding fixed is such an organic riding experience as its simply an extension of your body. You can be at one with the tarmac as you can communicate with your bike without the interfering freewheel

  • I still don't understand why all of you who favor gears are here.

The pure "track bike" is about as close to fixed gear culture as skiing is to snowboarding.

The track bike does not need saving. Fixed gear on the street needs saving - from cyclists/the cycling industry.

  • Why is this here?!

  • I still don't understand why all of you who favor gears are here.

Can one not enjoy riding geared and fixed equally?

  • Why is this here?!

So I keep coming across bikes like this I like, they're not porn, not anti, not rat/beater/frankenbikes, trick, Lo-Pros or polo bikes...

Just something kind of awesome that you would actually own or ride.

    Because of this^

It got a reaction out of you?! So you must care enough to mention it.

You are an advocate for bikes in general, I'm an advocate for Fixed gear bikes. I'm not on the road bike forum chastising members for riding gears.

See also: I'm a hypocrite. Fuck right off.

  • Can one not enjoy riding geared and fixed equally?

I don't see how, they are completely different riding experiences.
(I'm talking about a fixed gear bike sans brakes that is ridden on the street)

  • but different is good, I like riding my trick bike for tricks... my slave bike for skids and bopping round town... then my road bike for riding miles

  • This thread was the last haven for "fixed gear bikes" on this forum in my book.

  • ^^ This

  • Variety is the spice of life.

I'm going to spend 10 days in Wales this month (I probably ride 30-40 days there a year) ... It would be absolutely miserable on a fixed gear.

Also, Andy- I suspect that if everyone who rides gears did as you suggest and stopped posting on the forum there would be hardly anyone here. Things change sometimes, people like gears and fixed. They shouldn't be banished to bike radar for their sins.

  • but different is good, I come here to look at fixed gear and single speed bikes... then go to the road bike forum to look at those bikes

    F'ing Fixed! :)

  • I don't see how, they are completely different riding experiences.

So? So one has to choose one over the other? If you genuinely believe that, then count me confused, because I don't see how that argument works.

but different is good, I like riding my trick bike for tricks... my slave bike for skids and bopping round town... then my road bike for riding miles

    Precisely this.

who said they favour gears? They were just trying to say that there's the right tool for the job, going down big hills is the domain of freewheels. Sure you could do it fixed but it will be slower, sketchier and much more dangerous.
This forum isn't a competition to see who can be the most "pure" to fixed gear cycling.

  • Fixed gear bikes are not an endangered species

  • F'ing Fixed! :)

hahaha i see what you did there...
