I ride a brakeless fixed gear on the road. I do maybe 100 miles a week on it. I enjoy it very much.
I also ride a fancy pants carbon fibre road bike. I really like that, too.
Whilst I understand the difference between the two, I honestly don't think it's substantively different enough for someone to be able to enjoy one and not the other, unless you hugely over-theorise it.

who said they favour gears? They were just trying to say that there's the right tool for the job, going down big hills is the domain of freewheels. Sure you could do it fixed but it will be slower, sketchier and much more dangerous.
This forum isn't a competition to see who can be the most "pure" to fixed gear cycling. No but it is the LFGSS forum, not the LRBCC forum.
I'm trying to make you realise there is a distinct difference. I'm not competing with anyone. Just trying to make you think... just like a fixed gear bike does.

RE: my above post - If everyone was on this forum talking about jetskis or something, then I could understand the frustration. But honestly, the difference between fixed and gears is so small that it's to be expecting that people who like one thing like the other.

Variety is the spice of life.
I'm going to spend 10 days in Wales this month (I probably ride 30-40 days there a year) ... It would be absolutely miserable on a fixed gear.
Also, Andy- I suspect that if everyone who rides gears did as you suggest and stopped posting on the forum there would be hardly anyone here. Things change sometimes, people like gears and fixed. They shouldn't be banished to bike radar for their sins.
It used to be just fixed gear riders on here... it was awesome. It's not as awesome now. Fewer would be better and sorting the wheat from the chaff would not be necessary.

Obviously the difference is greater to some than others and that's fine. To me geared road bikes or any geared bike does not belong on this forum in any form. Its a fucking FIXED GEAR SINGLE SPEED FORUM.
End of story.

So, a fixed gear bike without brakes teaches you to look further ahead whilst riding in traffic. It forces you to think constantly because if you stop paying attention it's too late to react. For some people this feeling is too intense, then they move on to riding regular bikes.
On a road bike you don't have to pay attention constantly, although If you have ridden a fixed gear bike the skill of looking further ahead is transferable.
A fixed gear bike not only makes you think, it makes you completely change the way you ride a bike on the road in traffic in a safer and more cautious way.

Let me put it in simpler terms...If there were less road bikes on here I would not have to look through umpteen pages just to find a good fixed gear or single speed bike on this here forum of the same name...
Better :)

That's just not true - if you look at some of the strongest riders I have had the pleasure of meeting from the forum (hippy, bmmf, andyp, jaygee, Dov, etc) they have all come from riding gears AND riding fixed / track. The argument you are making is pretty blinkered.

You are talking about strongest as in fittest right? Because I'm not talking about how fit people are.

JB one hour ago... you must have him on ignore.
You can choose whichever you like, you are an intelligent person.
Do you ride a brake less fixed gear bike on the road?
If yes, then you should understand the difference.
(depending if the brake less bike fixed gear bike you ride matches your capabilities - because this is important)
If no, you will never understand the difference.
