These steel elements in the Pompidou are called gerberettes:
This picture, which was in some architecture text book I had, always fascinated me:
Fucking massive! The tension and leverage enabled by them is what makes the Pompidou's structure work, allowing the floorplates to span without columns.

I wouldn't mind betting it was influenced by Cedric Price's influential 'Fun Palace' idea:

^ Singapore?
Not had time to go through this thread, but, does anyone have any nice websites for architects please. Looking for things that go beyond the "big slideshow and no text" formula.
Goes back to reading through ...
Edit: Having read through, I'm inclined to ask. Does anyone actually look at architects practices websites any more? Or is it all blog + tumblr based?

yes, marina bay sands something. reminds me of something from a william gibson novel.

I've got some good pictures from the Sands, it's awe inspiring because of it's size alone.
For me it's more of an engineering marvel then a architectural marvel, if that makes any sense at all. -

[damn you coppiThat!]Normally don't like stuff like this, but in the mountainous context the jagged planes make sense. Lovely interior, if sparse.

Yepp, and Pompidou kind of summed up all the 60s utopian ideas etc.
Something that I really enjoy from 60s uptopian architecture:Yona Friedman

Agreed, the road elevation of the Pompidou centre has got to be its most unashamedly iconoclastic. No fucking windows and colour-coded service ducts as ornament. Well fuck me dead.
Jean Baudrillard's description of the Pompidou in Simulacra and Simulations is brilliant
