  • Dunelm.

We had a good grey one which we gave away I think because it was surplus to needs.

Assuming the black chair pictured is a normal size, it wasn't quite as ridiculously large as that.

  • Is this the right thread for design inspo ideas

I reckon the extensions thread is better. Responses might be more realistic/applicable rather than aspirational American bungalows.

  • Yeah fair - I kind of wondered what was within the possible too but we do have to kind of acknowledge what is realistic....

  • Is there some sort of rule I can apply to alcove shelving?

Currently planning to build a TV alcove unit thing from an ikea besta with some sort of nicer top, hidden cables and shelves (maybe a cupboard) above.

Very old pic, but it's the one I have with dimensions and a scalish drawing. I'm expecting about 1m of space above the TV in which to add shelves.

    other questions:

    1. is going up to the ceiling in a low room a bad idea?
    2. Should the gap above and below the TV be the same or should one be bigger/smaller?

    Cheers.

  • I am how in negotiations with somebody for a Flos one of these. It needs a bit of love, but if I get it for the right price I’m in. Oh and they may have an orange Snoopy table lamp available as well.

  • There are rules for this sort of thing, but I wouldn’t worry about them.
Put the TV where you need it. Then just space the rest around it. Personally I’d build a unit that slots into the space and fix that to the wall. I’d also have it not reach the floor or the ceiling at the front and light the gaps up with a glow light. But apparently I’m old fashioned.

  • Sorry, in case I wasn't clear, the following are modelled at their approx correct height;

    • bottom cupboard
    • cupboard to TV gap
    • TV
    • ceiling
It's everything north of the TV top that's up for discussion.

A 2 unit ikea besta is 1200mm wide, so using a 2nd hand one is cheaper than the sheet material, cuts out making a box, doors, etc. as well as being ikea size standards for future config changes. I'll fill the gap on either side somehow either as a 1cm shadow gap or blend into the wall.

I'm still undecided about the bottom. I like your idea. Other option would be joining into the skirting.

  • I should add that there is no alcove on the right of the fireplace. Just a flat wall.

  • Is there a replaceable lamp/light alternative to something like this. Cannot bear lights that do not have replaceable bulbs/leds.

Need a kitchen lighting overhaul and something over an island is my starting place. Thanks

  • replaceable bulbs/leds.

Most reasonable quality LED's upwards have a very long life span which is why they are quite often built into the fitting. Packaging LED's into a replaceable lamp is quite limiting and compromises what they can do. IME it's the driver that fails so i'd want to check that can be replaced. I'd also recommend something dimmable for a kitchen island, especially if you're going with a glowing tube.

I used to spec Encapsulite a fair bit and it's solid kit with good service and are UK based.

Are you willing to trade light levels with aesthetics? A PH lamp would be nice but is fairly hopeless for anything other than daytime photos to be posted on LFGSS.

I love a paper pendant if you have a decent bulb. Akari probably not 500 times better but Hay might be 50.

  • We’ve got a PH5 in the dining area so wanted something similar to the paper pendant but with better quality.
Saw some nice lights @ Ludlows of Holloway in Bath
    Top pic is a Hay

  • Same thing, but from akari

  • Just looked and it’s £950 so that’s not going to happen
Just found some a lot cheaper!!

I’ve been pondering one for above our dining table. Do you have a pic of yours in situ you could share?

  • Ha!

Lights beautiful. I think I’m sold

  • @johnnettles2
Mind if I ask where you ended up sourcing yours from? Seems to be a lot out there

  • Some pretty good discounts depending on the colour although still a bit £!

  • No probs . It makes having an evening meal a little bit more 👌

  • So much better than mine with that massive drop. The uplight is a bit ugly on the ceiling as i only have a 300mm drop and it needs more. What bulb are you using?

I have the Hay globes with large dim to warm bulbs, Factorylux rose and cables. Less than £100 and are much nicer than a lot of expensive kit that i come across.

  • Which dim-to-warm bulbs are you using?

Which dim-to-warm high-CRI bulbs would you recommend, in E27 and GU10 form factor?

I'm currently using 'Lucide' brand dim-to-warm GU10 spots (CRI 95) in my kitchen; they work well, but am looking for E27 versions, and maybe brighter GU10 equivalents also.
