  • I suppose it's cheaper to own a 3 or 4 of these cogs than several WI freewheels?

  • The new Felt Breed.

A bit brave sending out a 2012 cross frame with no disc tabs. For the kind of money that's going to cost, I could stand an extra 200g on the f&f in exchange for future-proofing

  • I'm loving the Felt Breed, never liked Felt in general (especially their cheap roadie), but that look great, it even got the SRAM S900 carbon levers!

Might be talking balls here, but it wouldn't just be 'adding' disc tabs right?
The frame would have to be modified/reinforced in places, innit?... so, not 'just' 200g...
Anyway, I agree, it should have the option.
Again - 2012, worst year for new bikes.

  • Of ever.

The official spec sheet says Apex, I'm assuming S500 in the black colorway, not S900.

  • I didn't think there's an S500 in black.

Surely the lack of disc tab is a good way to keep the cost down, how much did the old Breed sell for?

  • 750 squid

  • I didn't think there's an S500 in black.

Always has been, you just don't see many of them around.

Yes, and I'd allowed for that in my 200g estimate. The actual tabs account for less than half that in aluminium.

  • Everything else aside, two CX bikes side by side in the shop, same price, one has discs and the other doesn't- which one is going to sell?

  • The red one.

  • Actually you'll be surprised it's usually the cheaper model (Specialized Tricross before they had the fork issue).

Currently it's the Cannondale that's selling very well, the one that's not despite it's reduction is the Pinnacle 105 with disc.

  • I said same price Ed, and Pinnacle is still seen as Evans house brand- it's not a (perceived, maybe) match for a make like Cannondale.

But I don't work in a bikeshop, so what do I know.

It just seems a bit of a retrograde step to release a cross bike without the facility to run discs now that they are coming into the sport following the rule change.

  • Grrr.

Discs were fine in the vast majority of cyclocross races *before *the ruling, all the luddites at the UCI have done is allow them in UCI sanctioned races now.

  • I thought that the rule change now meant things like the Sram hydro groupset are going to happen, whereas before they would not have put the time and money into developing something that could not be officially raced?

  • In UCI sanctioned races.

  • That is

  • Definitely, I'm looking forward to the next step in bicycle evolution.

Well, not much of an evolution, but hydro + brake hood would be a fantastic combination.

  • Everything else aside, two CX bikes side by side in the shop, same price, one has discs and the other doesn't- which one is going to sell?

    The red one.

    No, the other one.
(Dammit) So, you're saying that because a CX frame with Disc brakes will sell more, they should just do it like that?

  • Depends what the company is trying to achieve- if one of their goals is selling bikes, then it might make sense to make them attractive?

I admit that Specialised still sold a lot of Langsters even after they painted it brown, that said.

  • Can't see how a UCI change would had led to investment from the large bike companies. The majority of riders of OTP cyclocross bikes are not racing in UCI events and those that do don't number that many do they? Not in overall bike sales terms.

I think discs were on the way anyway and it has just coincided. I can't see a need for the braking advantages from discs as my mini v's with swisstop pads have never let me down but the gritty/grinding from a dirty rim is not pleasant.

  • I'm not sure SSCX racers all want discs at the moment. It's that crowd who the Felt will sell to.

It looks to me like the more 'multi-purpose' bikes are, the more likely discs will feature. It could be that discs are seen as more useful on trails and for loaded touring than actual racing?

  • It could be that discs are seen as more useful on trails and for loaded touring than actual racing?

Why wouldn't racers want a brake that works the same way every time, regardless of conditions? Even if you don't end up with more power, the utter predictability lets you pedal further before you try the brakes, and one metre can be the difference between stuffing it up the inside of your competitor and having to follow them round the corner.

People made the same comments about disc brakes on MTB XC bikes; they're too heavy, V-brakes already have plenty of power etc. Now look at the field in pretty much every XC race and try to find some rim brakes

  • Put TRP CX9 on that Felt and it'll be perfect.

hmmm.. if it cost about 750 smacko, then roughly £300 trade seemed like a great deal, hopefully the small size have a tall enough headtube to make up for my high.
