Except for where we keep the Aboriginals.
You have museums in Australia?

That's my point exactly. Telling me he was black would not help me discern from any of the thousands of black geezers about. What purpose does this nugget of info serve here? Why did we even need a description of the perp? Are we going to form a posse and go in search of vigilante justice.
Anyway, either you get it or you don't won't flap my gums about it anymore.
Fuck me, he wasn't asking for his DOB and shoe size, just what he looked like. Exactly the same if he was blond; "He was a blond geezer"

It's kinda in-joke, because for her everyone fucking looks either like Robert De Niro or Dolph Lundgren for some reason .

I agree, especially in media reports, it's not necessary most of the time. Especially when ethnicity/race/religion etc. has nothing to do with committed crime.
Press article stating that a Lithuanian under an influence of legal hights raped a Muslim middle aged African lady, a mother of 5 children, who was a failed asylum seeker doesn't bring anything to the table but a cheap thrill for the EDL members. -

Racist
I of course simplified it, as she's got few more types. For you she has reserved "non-cockney Phil Mitchell lookalike". Everyone bald is Phil Mitchell, innit? You have to keep it neat and simple.
*"Phil Mitchell lookalike held a post office in Moss Side".
*Same thing as the OP. -

We are visual creatures, our first port of call in our senses is sight. Racism is about inference, intent to be malicious, not simply saying what you see.
What we 'see' is heavily filtered by mental set. There's a huge amount of prejudice affecting cyclists, and lots of those with the prejudice 'see' RLJers, but don't 'see' the cars jumping reds, or driving whilst on their mobiles, or whateverthefuck.
Due to skin colour being the only salient thing that was 'seen' in the context of a possible crime, plenty of people will have their racist inferences bolstered.
If you think racism sucks – it does, doesn't it? – why give ammunition to the racists, closet or otherwise?

People will be racist regardless of what ammunition they choose to see/use or not. I'm not going to try and measure what I say in order to preempt whether or not those listening are racist. And whether or not they 'might' use this ammunition to fuel their own racist tendencies. I'm not responsible for how others 'use' what I say.
However, for example, if at the point of mentioning that the intruder had a shaved head 1 gold stud earring and was black someone listening made a racist or dodgy comment then they'd get pulled up on it. If they 'thought' something racist or the man's colour wasn't mentioned and they thought 'I bet he was black' even though say for arguments sake in this instance the intruder was white. Then that's their sad little world and they're welcome to it.

@ VanUden - fine. I think that you can slowly erode racism by subtley changing the political environment. People are sheep. There's more to the war against prejudice than simply being reactive. I thought you'd be acutely aware of the power of words, with your background.
@ TS - fuck off. I've done 102 miles today. You?

Yes I agree that words are massively important as is language. I do find political correctness just as depressing as racism though (censorship falls into this for me as well). And I agree that most people don't like thinking for themselves too much and will regurgitate whatever is convenient and has been programmed into them at some point.
As a partial aside I asked a close friend what she thinks about Golliwog dolls as a black woman. Her response was simply "well, they're just dolls aren't they". I thought that was pretty healthy and can't help feeling that actually a lot of the inherent angst in what's racist and what's not is of more interest to the hand-wringing white middle classes who are the modern day equivalent of mediaeval hair-shirt wearers.

You find Political Correctness just as depressing as Racism?
Political Correctness is about awareness not censorship.

Racism is straight forward. People struggle with PC.
