  • Just like to say one thing re. cutting chains off waist etc.

'how often do you lock a chain around your waist then leave the keys behind?'

I'm off now. saunters into distance

  • youll only do it once...

  • None of the bikes are actually locked properly. The whole idea seems like a disaster.

  • An experiment is called for.

It involves lining up hipsters, strapping locks to half of them, then pushing them over.

    5th floor got there first?

  • The whole idea seems like ...

    this:

  • Hi Guys,

Thanks for the comments! I'll (try) to keep it brief, but just to say anyone that has questions about the comfort and safety of the product should go check it out themselves. Fitzrovia Bicycles on New Cavendish St will have stock this weekend, along with a trial lock that you can try on.

The guy that mentioned the bikes not being locked up properly on the website is absolutely right - we were just trying to get some nice angles to show the product off, not trying to show how a bike should be locked. We hope that most people that buy them already know how to lock their bikes up properly. The locking diameter is between 85 and 90cm. The packaging does contain some details on best locking practice etc.

We hope people don't honestly think we would produce, invest and market a product that we wouldn't use ourselves, with our own comfort and safety in mind. We are not a tobacco company...

The Hiplok can be used on its own or of course in tandem with other locks ( from other lock manufacturers ) depending on the situation, journey and security level needed. We think its a really nice addition to anyones security arsenal.

Thanks for reading - if you have any other questions you can get our email address on the website.

    Cheers.

  • looks great, I love it.

Ignore him, it's internet, it's full of that kind of 'insight'.

  • If you double wrap it round your neck, it will stop you getting whiplash

  • Cheers Help! Yep we all know about the "blog heroes" - its always a little hard to take to hear someone talk negatively about something they've not seen in the flesh... Especially when you've put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into making it happen. We're having really positive feedback anyway, but just wanted to set the record straight on a couple of points. Have a great weekend.

  • @ Hiplok team, what precautions have you made to make the chain safe to wear around your body? is the material surrounding the chain padded? If I were to cycle to work on an icy morning, whilst wearing your product, and fall off due to the ice, can you ensure that the chain wrapped around my body would not harm me any more then the floor as I hit it?

I am genuinely concerned about the safety of your customers, I am not a "blog Hero". I have experience of 2 people not able to cycle now due to falling onto a chain worn around the waist whilst cycling. I also do not need to see your product in the flesh to understand the potential dangers that the Hiplok has.

Do you think someone would have a case against you if they were to break their back due to falling onto the first "wearable lock"?

I look forward to your response.

  • Hi dres.

I am very sorry to hear about your friends that have sustained injuries while riding, I'm a biker myself and have had enough time off the bike due to broken bones etc while downhill mountain biking to know how horrible that is.

We have developed and tested the product over a two year period and have put a lot of thought into reducing the possibility of any potential injury due to the use of our product. Of course as with all products you can buy, the final choice and decision to buy and use a product in a certain way lies with the consumer.

    All the best.

  • That sounds like a tacit admission that you are aware that the Hiplok has the very real potential to cause serious injury.

I know that riders often carry items in their jersey pockets but there's a world of difference between falling onto a rolled up jacket and going spine, kidney or hip first onto some metal.

damn right, people saying stuff like people carry cameras keys etc....... none of them compare to a heavy chain lock, which by its very nature is meant to be heavy thick and strong. I do really like the concept but I don't think i'd ever get on for that very reason, major design flaw imo

  • Hi Guys - as I mentioned before, please go and check one out for yourself if you're interested, no obligations, then you can make judgements based upon your experience. This is where my brief obsession with the blog has to end I'm afraid, otherwise I'll be on here all day. Happy riding.

    srsly?

I sometimes ride with an abus around my waist as a second lock. If I fall off, Im fucked. Im hardly going to sue abus, am I?

  • In life we avoid risks

  • so we can make it safely to death

  • but are Abus encouraging you to carry it round your waist?

  • Yeah, but...

  • like, wear a helmet.

  • i think this is a good idea

People ride a round with locks round their waste that aren't designed for that purpose; the risks are the same whether it is this product or any other lock. The fact a Hiplock is designed for this and thus easier to remove surely weighs in its favour. Riding a bike on London streets is dangerous; your probably just as likely to break your spine because of a pothole in the road as you are landing on your lock

There are countless threads that start with someone presenting a new idea, and then hundreds of posts shooting it down claiming that its puts users lives at risk. People should encourage innovation rather than fostering a climate of aggressive conservatism

  • Is wearing a Hiplok safer and better for your body then wearing a cheaper gold secured normal chain around your waist? I would imagine with 2 years development you would have come up something?
