This might be of interest to free maps users:
BikeRouteToaster's route import/export functionality has been down for a while (looks like the site is being updated, though, so it might be back soon).
This scuppered my normal method of getting a tcx file with turn-by-turn instructions for my Edge 800. (Could've sorted it by upgrading my RideWithGPS account but didn't want to spend the money).
Turns out GPSies will export cues, and can add them to imported routes (as with BikeRouteToaster you don't even need to register). It gives you a frightening array of export options - I went for 'Garmin Course TCX' from the 'Track' list, and it worked a treat. It gives you the nice satnav-style integrated white arrows on the Garmin, rather than the little pop-up arrows that I got when using BikeRouteToaster exports. Much easier to follow :-)
(BikeHike is another option, and seems to be more of a direct equivalent to BikeRouteToaster, but a section of one my routes got messed up during upload and there didn't seem to be any way of correcting it, which is why I moved on to GPSies.)

All garmin 800 courses however generated and imported can give turn by turn directions, this includes, TCX, FIT, GPX tracks and GPX routes.
This assumes that the map on the device is routable (openstreetmap is), the course needs to have its settings set to "turn guidance" on. -

Should I get a cheap 800, or should I bother getting the 810. None of the upgrades seem particularly important to me...
Also, forward-facing mounts; which ones have two bolts so I don't have to re-wrap my bars to fit 'em?

Get an 800 from handtec. I like the mount from superstar ti.
Two bolts adjustable, not the lightest but secure.
Can fit standard and oversize bars.

K-Edge has 2 bolts, a plastic mount point, and is turnable for TT or a 910xt. Very nice.

My Garmin maps are locked to my 705; do I remember correctly?
-
• #860
I swapped my SD maps from my 705 to my 800 with no problems

I broke the little plastic thing that the magnet on the spokes screws into. Anyone got any hacks for restoring it?
Is it just any old magnet? Can I just glue a strip magnet on to the spoke like this guy:

thx all!

Not sure if this is the right thread as I'm open to non-Garmin suggestions but am looking for a bike computer to do the following:
*connect/show my heart rate from my Polar heart rate monitor
*RPM
*speed and distance coveredWhat do you recommend?
if I want navigation stuff on top of that, it's going to be costly, right??
-
• #868
Yes. Garmin 500 can navigate but on basic terms.
800/810 can navigate properly.
RPM&speed can be very cheap with a little crap bike computer, £20 or so would do it.
-
• #869
And would those Garmins show heart rate too?
-
• #870
Yes they would - with the Garmin HRM band. Connects to your Garmin via ANT+ connectivity.
On a separate note, I have got the BarFly 2.0 out front Garmin mount. Can't fault it and looks great. I'd only use a plastic out front mount for fear of shaving off the plastic stub on my Garmin with the sharper Aluminium options that are out there.

So anyone else excited by the Fenix 2?
-
• #872
Fenix II- yeah, I sent the DC Rainmaker link to the Mrs saying "I would like for my birthday please".

my 705 is a brick, nothing on screen, nothing happened with i plug usb in, nothing happens when i press the buttons. no idea how it happened, any suggestions?
-
• #874
That happened to me. Turned out the battery was just completely dead. Left it to charge and it sprung into life after a few minutes. Hopefully your problem is equally easy to resolve.
-
• #875
Well i'd left it on charge so I could ride with it today, I did hear it beep this morning when i laptop woke up but its poop.
I D O N O T W A N T T O B U Y M O R E S T U F F.
