I've got an Ant sensor here which my MacBook doesn't support - I'm on OS 10.5.x and it needs 10.6.x. Is there ay way around this? People were running sensors way before this OS version, but Garmin's current software just won't install.

:)
I managed to track down an old version of the software, and it seems to be connecting.
I just went for a quick one mile run and uploaded it - now waiting to see if it appears on Garmin Connect. If it does then I'm golden. I may also try GarminSync.com so that it automagically appears on Strava. If that works, then I'll try to get my Edge 510 to automatically upload as well (can they do that?) and then my whole life will be automated (apart from going to work, cooking food, etc)...

Nothing like that available from what I can see in settings. I can't plug it straight in, it has no USB, just works via the SD card, and all I can see on that is the tracks I loaded on to it.
Depending on how you have the device set up, the log files will be on the device and not the card.Does the device appear as a drive when plugged in.?
If the device is like the older etrex you need to set the device into mass storage mode using the setup option on the device.

The oregon 450t has a mini usb port.

I have the Garmin 910xt which is a Triathlon watch, as such it is waterproof to 50m.
This means that an open USB port is not viable so all data transfer is handled via ANT+, a USB key sits in a port on my laptop and ANT Agent runs in the background, so as soon as I return to the house my watch starts uploading whatever activity I have just completed to the laptop, which then loads it into Garmin Connect.
An interesting issue is that once the file has been uploaded to ANT Agent any other programs (Strava, training peaks, etc etc) can upload the file direct from the watch, but until that initial upload has happened via ANT Agent the activity is invisible to those other programs.
I went for a 10k run yesterday along the cliffs, got home and the god-damn thing got stuck in a fugue state of transferring, getting to 100% uploaded, then cycling back to 0% again.
I spent a good 2 hours in front of the TV trying to get the damn thing to work, and in the end gave up.
I finally deleted ALL activities on the watch, then gave it a master reset.
It's now, theoretically, like "new", with no data, latest software release etc etc.
However, if you open Device Agent, you can still see all the old activity files in there.
It looks like deleting an activity simply deletes the address from the Garmins memory, but leaves the file there, but other programs can still see the files- although not the run from last night annoyingly.
Does anyone have any idea if the run from last night is still recoverable?

Isnt it the other way around?
Deleted files are goneski. But the address is still there. My 910xt that the jobsworth in the store said was unused, despite the fecked box. Has a running file from 3 weeks before I bought it, on it. I'd complain. But its the last they had, and the cheapest locally.
My first 2 activities uploaded as you describe. But after that I've had to have laptop, and watch powered up. Then I need to remove, and re-insert to dongle to promote the transfer.
Also. Could just be my new watch. But I had a software update from something.27 to something .28 over the weekend. Seems to be behaving better now.

My Edge 800 tracks cycling calories much lower when I've got my hr strap on, to the extent that this mornings 30k bike ride came to 680 calories, now this might be because my hr is low because I'm fit (#boastpost) and this is acccurate but has anyone else experienced this and found a solution to get it displaying something more realistic (online calculators have anything from 1000 to 1400 for the activity...
Its not a massive problem, but I'd like to feel as though I could eat a pretty decent amount between arriving at work and having to cycle the same distance home!

I keep debating whether to get an Edge 500 or not. Perhaps someone can help push me either way.
I'm mostly getting it for speed and cadence but I also like the idea of the simple breadcrumb line for following courses and I like that it has barometric altitude sensors as well as GPS but I just don't see the point in a device that's using ANT+ when Bluetooth 4.0 is poised to usurp it. And before you all pounce on me I know Garmin is the standard and I really don't want to attach a phone to my stem but I can't help thinking Garmin's going to go the way of RIM and Edge the way of the Blackberry in the next year or two once this new generation of wearable devices hits the market and raises the bar once again on what's doable with technology.
Any thoughts or should I stop being tight and hand over the 200 notes that the kit I want is going to cost?

I guess the main advantage relating to a phone is battery life - you have two separate devices rather than relying on the fairly stingy battery capacity in modern mobile phones (if you look at battery usage on most Android phones, usually 50+% will be screen), and ruggedness - not many phones are really water-resistant, and is that a risk you want to take

Might it be reporting expended calories (i.e. minus your basic maintenance rate)?

You're right Branwen. I definitely don't want to put my phone on my bike. Battery would be dead in 45 minutes and, like you said, it'll get wet and break. I guess I'm thinking of future products (among them the rumoured iWatch) along the same lines as the Wahoo RFLKT, a low energy device whose screen mirrors your smartphone which hides in your jersey pocket collecting all the sensor data and bluetooth beaming it to the cycle computer. I'm just not convinced by the features of the RFLKT hence dithering once again over forking out for a Garmin.

How long are you going to be prepared to wait?
The majority of what will be available in 2014 will either already have been announced, or will be announced at Eurobike over the next few days.
I reckon you'd be pretty safe buying a 500/510 today and selling it toward the end of 2014 to get whatever BLE device you want.

My 705 is no longer being fun.
When plugged in by USB, it goes straight to "acquiring satellite".
I've contacted Garmin and I'm waiting for the master reset to try and fix it.In the meantime, I've been told by them it'll be 80 quid for replacing as out of warranty.
The current edge products don't have mapping, the 705 does, until you get to the 800 series do they??

Seems like Garmin came up with a deviced specifically aimed at the bike touring market:
http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/08/garmin-touring-computer.htmlBasically an 810 stripped down of almost everything but with improved maps/touring/routes functions.
The plus version comes with ANT+ HRM support, temperature sensor and barometric altimeter.I am curious to see a more detailed review in the future...

My Edge 800 appears to have frozen - it's just stuck on the opening screen that's all black and just says garmin. Have tried pressing and holding all the buttons to see if I can revive it, but no joy... shit.
Any remedies folks? At the moment the only thing I can think of is waiting for the battery to go and hoping that it will wake up again.
-
• #744
If you've got an SD card in there try taking that out and doing a hard reset.
-
• #745
Just sorted it, thanks though Dammit.. there's a sneaky way of waking it up here:
I'd tried taking out the SD card before doing this and the file now doesn't seem to upload to garmin connect. Does to strava though which is weird. pretty annoying but could be worse I guess

Just got an Edge 510 for a very good price.
What's the deal with the cadence magnet hack? What kind of magnet can I use and just put on the back of the pedal spindle (glued?) instead of the ugly zip-tie job? -
• #749
Get a rare earth magnet that is a smaller diameter than your pedal spindle and 1-2mm thick and it'll hold itself onto a ferrous spindle.
Titanium (and some stainless steels) not an option- but you could use a glue gun.

• #750
ok thanks!
can I just disassemble an old counter wheel magnet? Or is there another easy source?
Eyebrows - you'll be able to follow the track - a pink line will be displayed - but the map on your device won't display the underlying trails on its map.
