Very excited to be getting my first garmin, decided on the edge 800.
What's the battery life like realistically, would I be foolish to expect it to be able to use strava and maps for a 100 mile ride?

Lasted the Dunwich dynamo for me and I am old and very slow.
Realistic battery life 15-16 hours navigating.
So if you cannot average 6 kph probably not. -

who uses ride with gps with edge 510? I am loading a course using GPX and it keeps giving me warnings like 'head south' 'turn left' etc which interrupts the course interface. I used to do that with edge 200 and all I ever need is just a line that I can follow, none of this warnings shit. How do i turn them off? I went through literally every option on the device. Help!
try this, assuming the Garmin 510 is similar to the 800:
You need to turn this off for each individual course.
Menu>Course>[select an existing course]>[spanner icon]>Turn Guidance>OFFdoes that work?

If I buy a Forerunner 210 without an HRM, will it play nice with the Ant+ HRM strap that came with my Garmin 800?

Been dragging and dropping .GXP and .TCX files into it but so far nothing shows up on the damn thing.

Depends how slow you are. You should get around 12 hours out of it with mapping enabled and some screen switching, messing with settings, odd recalculation, etc.

No. Create .gpx "Tracks" and put them in the NewFiles folder. They will be inhaled by the 800 and show up in the Courses menu.
Search this thread for how to use bikeroutetoaster to do turn-by-turn tracks/routes. -

Can anyone tell me how to export completed tracks from an Oregon 450t to get them onto Strava?

If you have saved the track to your device, it will be in a folder on your device or micro sd card depending on how you have set the device to store the log files.
To upload to strava have your device plugged in use the "upload" "from file" option.Navigate to your saved track viola!!!

That's just the thing, I can see the routes are saved on the device, but I can't see them on the SD card, and can't figure out how to copy them across.

Depending on how you have the device set up, the log files will be on the device and not the card.Does the device appear as a drive when plugged in.?
If the device is like the older etrex you need to set the device into mass storage mode using the setup option on the device.

Garmin does intermittenly not recognize maps anymore. SD card, where maps are, looks a bit bad on the contacts. Any way to make a copy of the SD card?

705.
I think you can just use file copy, the map lock file is just a text file. If you have locked maps on the card. The lock file is something.unl and is tied to the device id and not the card.
i.e. copy all the files off the card (if possible) and place them on the new card. You may be able to read the card easier in a sd/microsd card reader rather than the garmin. These allow a micro sd card to be read in any usb port.

Tricky one: I understand that you can upload to Garmin Connect via the iPhone when you click "save" at the end of a ride with the Edge 510. But what about subsequently? Can I upload the five or so rides that are on there now via the app, or does it have to be done at the time?

Once anyone has answered Sparky's question (to which I don't know the answer)...
If I download a route that uses paths and trails, but only have the road maps, will it be fucking useless or are the paths for that area contained within a GPX file? -

A gpx file can contain routes, tracks and waypoints either singular or multiples of each.
Most gpx files that you download from course creation sites will be in fact gpx tracks and not gpx routes.
A gpx track is a series of lat and long points , the device does not actively work out a route but will just direct you to the next point .The device does not need to follow a road or track. Your device must be set up for routing off road if you have something like the edge 800 or 500. The etrex and dakota series differentiate between routes and tracks and will follow them accordingly.

Cheers. I'm not sure which they are yet, and still haven't decided if I'm going to go ride there yet.
Will try this, thanks
