Christmas present advice please!
Garmin watch for running and cycling tracking, under £300, which one is forum approved?

Require map routing?
If not, then I'd say 920xt is a good bet - The ability to fit a quick release kit is pretty essential for me as I hate cycling with all the stats on my wrist instead of on an out-front mount.

No mapping required, I'll have a look, thanks very much.

I always say Garmin 235 but no one else concurs so I may be wrong. Have never regretted it though. Also doubles as a great all day activity/sleep tracker and superb for cycling. Use it for my rides when I don't need navigation.

OK cool, I'll have a look!

Bought this Garmin a year ago from Matt and it keeps turning off - I hadn't used it for a couple of months, might this be why? Always been good as gold up until now.

Tried a soft or master reset?

Remove any SD card.
If no SD card, plug into computer and move any course files, activity files and maps off it.
If that fails, do what Pifko says. -

You know your Garmin don't you?

I've done a lot of 'fixing' Garmins.
800, fuckthe810 and 1000 have definitely all been put through their paces.

Which reminds me anybody got a spare 705 mount please?
-
• #3917
I need one too. They're quite costly for what they are on ebay, amazon et al.

My 820 sometimes decides not to work. Which is a bit annoying. Only does it maybe once in 20 rides.
Today, I rode down to Limehouse Basin, all was fine. Rode around to spitalfields, turned it off while I was doing stuff. When I turned it back on, screen went black.
Got home and did master reset which has brought it back to life, but no ride file in there.

Does it still have battery left when you get home to try the reset? (Sounds stupid I know, but there seems to have been a semi-common problem with the battery draining itself entirely whilst in 'standby' mode - with people not realising until the screen goes black next time they try to use it)
-

Yep, battery was still over 70% when I woke it up with the reset.
It's the first time it's done this black screen gig and refused to turn on through normal means. Previously it has just turned itself off randomly, turned itself on again and lost the ride up to that point.

Hmm, annoying.
Oddly enough that sort of classic random shutdown/lost data stuff is the one thing my 820 seems to be ok for so far (no incidents yet in 3000miles anyway). It is a frustrating piece of shit in many, many other ways though..!

I had that on a 510. Switched it on, did a bit of a ride then paused it. It shut itself down after a few mins of being paused and wouldn't come back on. Got home to find it had completely reset itself to factory (beeps switched back on etc) and had lost the ride. It's been ok since then, but had a couple of times where it's stuck on the initial Garmin screen and rebooting won't work. Plugging it into a charger got it out of that, but it already had mostly full battery.

The resets will normally blat your files so I'd try connecting to PC first if you want to save anything.

My other half has asked me to get her a Garmin for Christmas - Whats the difference between an 820 and an 820 "explore" - £50 price difference but it's not really clear what the explore one doesn't do compared to the normal one?
What's the best firmware on Garmin 500 for Stages powermeter use?
