  • On the arrow it was 178m to York instead of 254m. Perfect track.

  • Neither. Its not tracking on my watch, and after uploading to my phone, it is not recording the distance I have traveled. Just a reading of 0km.

  • Do you have a speed/cadence sensor?

Some Garmins do distance based on the data from that device (if present) so if there's a problem with it (and it's not reporting the wheel turning) you get no distance covered.

  • I do not, but that doesn't seem to have been a problem before as I have been using GPS and it measured distance no problem.

I wonder if it has something to do with my watch needing an update.....

  • My 1000 keeps on trying to install an update and then it always fails as it 'could not be validated'.

It seems that whenever this happens when i next turn it off, the unit turns off, but the screen sort of freezes with the power symbol still visible.

It then doesn't turn on again unless I hold the power button for about 5 secs.

    Anyone else having this?

  • Anyone else having problems with the Garmin connect app? Constantly crashing and taking forever to sync with my watch.

  • Did you get a watch in the end? thinking the same for tracking work mileage

  • Anyone have a spare USB Ant+ stick I can buy? mini-version if possible...

  • Has anyone got a spare cable that would fit my 810, that I could borrow for a couple of days until my new one arrives? North/central London.

  • i foolishly installed a garmin update and now it can't open maps

    any suggestions?

  • Not too sure what you mean, is it that you see no mapping on the device screen or something else.
If the former ensure the requisite map is enabled in the device settings.

  • It says "cannot open maps"

  • if i disable all the inbuilt maps and put in the old european city maps from my 850 it just crashes at the end of plotting a route and turns itself off

which of the inbuilt maps should i have enabled

    it has on offer:

    intl standard basemap

    garmin cycle map eu

    edge dem map

    garmin geocode map

but when i use them now it is being fucking useless, telling me a 13 mile trip across london will be 34 miles long

  • it seems my garmin is now not suitable for routing, just for recording data

  • On device routing is just about the worst possible option on any garmin cycling device, the more dedicated hiking devices offer better options such as multiple via points rather than just an end point.
With regard to maps, possible reasons for not reading correctly if they are on a micro sd card.

    1. Card making poor contact with device, remove card and wipe clean contacts.
    2. File system on card corrupt, replace card.
    3. I would suggest that the only active map should be , garmin cycle map eu.
  • telling me a 13 mile trip across london will be 34 miles long

    Sounds about right for Garmin.

  • from my 850

Assuming you mean the 820 the general consensus seems to be that you should leave them all enabled (or at least, people disabling them seem to run into other issues later on as far as I can tell). The simplest explanation of the 4 maps (which are enabled by default) on the Garmin forum seems to be this...

    • INTL Standard Basemap, NR -> gmapbmap -> global basemap (no routing info)-> keep enabled.

    • Garmin Cycle Map EU 2015.10 -> gmapprom -> detailed map for display and routing. The "Garmin Cycle" map has detailed image and routing data. (You need this or an equivalent map for navigating).

    • Edge DEM Map EU 2014.10 -> gmapdem -> Digital elevation database map -> enable if you want to pick a generated route based on elevation.

    • Garmin Geocode Map EU 2015.10 ->gmapgc -> addresses to coordinates map -> enable if you want to select an address/etc to route to. Otherwise, it doesn't matter.

  • when i first had the edge 1000 it was good at choosing routes, but seems to have become utterly useless these days. what did garmin fuck up so badly that it went from finding appropriate journeys to sending me in giant loops that start by going backwards and then overshoot the destination for me to then ride backwards to where i am going?

  • cheers

those are the ones i have installed. am wondering if i should download open source maps instead

  • Have you changed the routing preferences (you can choose fastest, cycle only, etc I think). The cycle only can come up with some strange routes.

  • Have you tried disabling them one by one to see which one is triggering the error?

I'm guessing it will be the Cycle Map (as that one has just been updated to 2016.20) - did it seem to update correctly (Garmin Express should prompt you to try again if it didn't)? Also, have you put the 5.1 firmware on yet?

  • the cycle routes are useless, i tend to tell it to navigate for a car (as these are the most direct routes - for a fucking low value of directness)

  • I had to update the map 3 times for it to even work.

    Firmware is version 11.10

  • Ah ok, so it is the 1000 you are struggling with rather than the 820. Ignore my firmware comment then (my comments on the maps being enabled still apply though).

  • Wahoo
