  • Apologies if this has been addressed already but how do I get "Distance to Next" to work properly? Did some Google searches and it seems that all I need to do is add a waypoint at the start then it will go from that waypoint to your next one rather than those highpoint and lowpoint ones that it puts it by itself.

I'm thinking of Audax riding in particular where it's handy to know how far it is to the next control so I tend to put them in as Waypoints and it's great when it works but mostly it doesn't.

  • Are you using gpx track files or gpx route files?

But as an aside I have only do the distance/time to next to work consistently on my etrex 30 using route files. On my 800 not consistent.

  • I use gpx track files. I've tried turn-by-turn but seem to prefer the purple line without any turn warnings. I just zoom in a bit when I'm in town and zoom out when it's country lanes. But on the last Audax (Willy Warmer) I used an unedited gpx file (I generally edit them first just to tweak and check) due to laziness and found that the distance to next was working perfectly.

I'll experiment with that first waypoint and see what happens.

  • ok, so my Garmin 810 has developed 2 new faults.

1 as evidenced here, https://www.strava.com/activities/476451661 it seems to think I am riding below sea level. What do I do, reset? I imagine a fix is straightforward.

2 on the menus for each screen, no text is showing until I 'touch' the option. i.e I wanted to change my HR from BPM to zone but I don't see the options in the menu, so I keep needing to touch each option in order to see what is written. Any experience of this, I can't find any documentation online. What do I do, reset? I imagine a fix is more complicated and I worry that if I reset and then have only blank screens as options it will take forever to set up my new screens.

  • I'm not quite sure what you are explaining but you can hold down on a metric, say Speed, and it will present a list of fields you can switch it to. Most of them are either obvious ("x kph") or have headings ("Lap Time").

You can also set these up in the Training Pages initially but it's a bit annoying.

Perhaps you can screenshot/photo the issue?

To be serious though, have you tried a hard reset and is the firmware up to date?

    Also:-

    "
    Setting Your Elevation

If you have accurate elevation data for your present location, you can manually calibrate the altimeter on your device. From the home screen, select Settings -> System -> GPS -> Set Elevation.
    "

  • the words only show when touched, the menus are blank so i can't read anything unless i touch the option i.e lap time. But all you can see are the different menu buttons but with nothing written in them.

  • Ok, that seems very odd. Sounds like reset time to me.

  • Does anyone knows what to do when Edge 800 doesnt detect SD card anymore?

  • Call Garmin until someone offers you the possibility of a warranty replacement card when you send the card to them.

  • Anyone having issues with Windows 10 and Garmin Connect? I saw the post by @hippy a while back but I can't even get the app to run (crash). The uninstall doesn't work (fail) and any attempt to reinstall causes an instant fail. Anyone have the same problems?

  • I would question why you need garmin connect , do you mean garmin express?
Use the manual upload option on the garmin connect website. Much less prone to software issues.

  • Pissing Garmins and Ant+. It works fine between accessories but has always been hugely hit and miss for syncing to a pc.

Hit a new high now though. Forerunner 410 watch. Tried Garmin Express and got a message (obviously after randomly plugging and unplugging the Ant+ USB half a dozen times) saying that the Forerunner 410 isn't supported by Garmin Express and use Garmin Map Updater.

Obviously Garmin Map Updater can't even see the device. Neither can the Garmin Web Update, neither can the Garmin Communicator Plugin in IE. They're just so fucking buggy with about 8 different pieces of software knocking around with no idea which does what.

  • Not tried it but I have a machine here with Win10 on I can test out.
    Thanks for holding, caller.

  • Wait, Garmin Connect? Not Express? I thought Connect was just their website?

  • Sorry - Garmin Express. The uninstallable crashy one.

  • I've installed it on the Win 10 box. No issues.
Don't have a device to test up/downloads with though.

  • Express and 10 just uploaded a run for me of my FR405.

It hasn't worked with my Edge 500 for months though.

  • Does anyone know if it is possible to get hold of spare parts to an Edge 200?

Garmin want the price of a new one to fix it - the screen says that the RAM is broken.

  • Which garmin will let me follow a route, measure my hr, cadence, and be useful on trainer road? I have an edge 200 and a 705 that is on last legs.

  • Almost any from the 500 upwards, by follow a route do you mean you want maps or just turn by turn directions? If maps start at the 800/810/1000.
Garmin head units are not used on train road.

For that you need, a speed sensor and an ant+ usb stick for your pc/laptop.

Turn by turn on the 500/510 and other non mapping types. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9699y_MBeA

  • My Fenix II once again totally failed to re-acquire my powermeter after a ten minute wait for a few others to turn up for some South London hills.

Howard - I forget, did you say that your Fenix 3 definitely picks up a powermeter after said powermeter has gone to sleep and then woken up again?

  • Because I love Garmin so much I just bought a 30x.

At least it's not an Edge device... it'll probably work.

  • I've been mulling one of these.
Using an etrex and then a 500 or something. Instead of the 1000.
