I just did cambridge-trumpington-harston-hauxton-shelford-cambridge loop, and as is my wont took a bit of a meander on the way back (and got lost once). True you won't be doing it at rush hour (oops) but the A10 crossing the M11 isn't all that much fun... If you don't mind a couple of detours, there are more characterful ways to finish the ride and get into the city.
From Newton, I would suggest turning off the B1368 onto Shelford Rd to Little Shelford, crossing the river towards Great Shelford, bear right at the fork and go to Shelford train station. 2nd left after the station leads to the start of the DNA path, which runs alongside train tracks and fields towards the hospital (tonight was a rare north wind so a bit cold and windswept but south-west is the prevailing). They're still in the process of building a new road to the hospital and the busway, so not sure what it'll be doing in April, but roughly speaking, head through the hospital site keeping to the west, turn left on Long Road (shared footpath) and cross over the rail tracks.
Turn right into Rutherford Rd to cut out the Long Rd / Trumpington Rd corner and for a brief tour of some of the most expensive houses in town! A cycle path lets you continue straight on, then turn left on Barrow Rd (private road, check out the lamposts). Turn right (north) on Trumpington Rd towards town (shared footpath).
When you pass the T-junction with Brooklands Ave, turn left on the footpath on the near side of the scruffy green patch. Follow it alongside the brook and bear right at the fork. Cross Fen Causeway and follow the path to the end and continue on Granta Place. You'll see the Mill pub on the corner, and the River Cam and the mill pond to the left. This is a good spot to finish as there are eats and drinks nearby, and hopefully the weather is good enough for hanging out on the grass by the river with a heap of bikes.
Sorry about the length of this, wasn't sure how else to do it! Each of the 3 paragraphs is an optional section. The paths don't show up in google...
I'm doubtful about being able to make this on fixed, but if I can maybe I could come out and escort you into town, even if I'm on the Brute. I'll try not to take too many wrong turns :)

Stayed at the Hilton next to the mill pub twice, lovely pub and cool hotel. Perfect spot to end the ride. When I rode to cambridge last year without consulting a map it was 60miles of awesome. Took sustrans out of town then more or less the posted route for the rest of it. Made the M11 junction crossroads/main road into town fail which wasn't much fun. Local lead to the finish ftw.
Hopefully in, will enlist myself nearer the date. Hopefully liz as well(alas, ss) -

Hoefla's riding all the way with us... aren't ya Hoefla?
ermm...
as far as pub recs go, I don't particularly rate the Mill or the Anchor or the Granta (all ok), but nothing beats sitting by the river on the grass if the weather's good and there are a couple of booze shops not too far from there that are open on Sundays. although the nearest is the kind of booze shop that only sells wine and whisky. maybe Pimms.
