  • What's turnaround comparison of the 3?

  • Why Matt/talbot? Because you are paying for someone to do something specific to you, rather than paying shipping and import duties

Tonics strike me as strong money for 4130 chromoly.

Geekhouse would be rad but again import duties...

  • Orlowski is also an option at around 700-850 euro for a painted frame - have seen some nice work from them, on here.

    Eingang and Psee

  • and CaptainP (not cx though)

  • Geekhouse will take 12-14 months atm.

  • Do you put down deposit or full payment to get onto waiting list?

  • I looked into all 3 before settling on Matt at talbot

Geekhouse was a $500 deposit, and 9-12 months wait in june, i also think with the enve fork it came to ~£1500 after imports

Tonic only deal in the UK via kinoko so you need to go off their prices not the ones on the Tonic website

  • Do you put down deposit or full payment to get onto waiting list?

Yep, what Rogan said. It's a $500 deposit to get you onto the waiting list. Marty then contacts you to discuss requirements and size and finalise everything and then he'll build it. He said you can pay whenever, or at the end. 12-14 month wait was in September.

  • Howard man, that bike is wicked.

  • The Giant is a bit of a shocker but I agree with ed on this. Its a cross race bike but so is the caadx disc that loads of people commute on, even with the cable routed along the top tube for shouldering making it easier to rip your sack off while commuting. What we need is more disc road bikes, or dare I say it, drop bar nodder hybrids

Your average hybrid buyer is put off by drops.

Those that like drops, just buy an audax if they want practicality, or a CX if they just want the improved poor weather capabilities.

    So its all covered anyway.

Last winter when the local stores were shifting bikes to clear room for skis. I mearsured up some disc braked hybrids. I had the gear to add drops to them. But they were just a little too long, and the BBs a bit too high.

  • Just out of curiosity I'm looking at this build. Basically a shitty weather road trainer. I rate Ultremos in the wet up here. I realise they dont make the most sense.

$499 brandless carbon frameset, with post mounts, and guard mounts.
Stans Crest 29er rims. 28R/28F laced 2x to Rotaz hubs.

  • ^ I had something similar in mind using that chinese carbon frame with 1x10 gearing but when I totted up the build pricing it got expensive fast. That's why I am looking at OTP cx bikes.

I saw this vid of the caadx105 disc and am leaning it towards it over the overpriced BMC but i'll still do a test ride. Cannondale CAADX disc 105 - YouTube

  • Cheaper, simpler and do the job.

    Basically this.

I dont really need the absolute best performance. Just brakes away from my rims. I'll almost certainly ride offroad on it. But I find my braking limited by my tyres than my brakes on a CX.

    Definitely true.

But I'll get a lot more buyers pleasure out a bit by bit build. Plus it allows me to spread it over Xmas, B'day present s etc.

I also want Campag to match my road bike, 165mm cranks, 50/34 - 12/27 11 speed gearing, and specific contact points.

I was thinking a shimano free hub with a 11 speed shimano cassette. To get around the Campag thing. Might need some dremel encouragement I guess.

Like the Pinnacle Arkose 2 with full hydraulic and 1x10 gearing?

  • Managed to get Kona jake the snake 2010 for a good price, now to think on which tires i should buy for our Finnish winter !!

  • Use tyres, they are far superior. :-)

    Full Carbon - BB7s - 105 - £999

and I quite like the Flanders paint too.

  • Halfords Boardman clearance of 2012/13 bikes bringing the CX Team down to £810. NUS and BC vouchers could make that £656.10. A lot of bike for not much money.

Cheap enough to fix the problems with the fork bung and BB and come out ahead of other options in that price range.

  • Cheap enough to pay a bicycle shop to perform a full PDI.

another 10% off this weekend too

  • Just out of curiosity, has anyone had any experience with the planet x xls cyclocross bike? It's full carbon and comes in at a grand.

Looking at the Giant TCX SLR2 and the Cannondale cadx disk they all look pretty similar, except for the frame material. Opinions?
