  • What sort of riding do you do? I have been using 45 psi in the front and 50 psi in the rear of the 33mm clement mxp while in the woods it is buttery and grippy while still being stiff enough. I weigh 68kg.

  • All this talk of 100kg riders @ 75psi on 25mm tyres and scoblestories of only pinching at 20psi doesn't really tally with my experience.

I do crash into a lot of shit but I need 70psi in 25s, and I'm 60kg. Less = pinches, even on my better local roads.

I need about 45psi in cross tyres (on trails) or I'm on borrowed time (or borrowed tubes).

  • 55 sounds right for mixed surface, you should be able to go no more than 35 for proper off-road though.

  • @keefer well at the moment I've only done one commute on it over Southwark bridge and it was intense but the pomp held up well, fuckin' blue paint everywhere and so much flouro I went blind for a bit but I did a track stand whilst stroking my sloping seattube all in front of a guy in full castelli (including codpiece) so I figured the ride was legit.

but on the real it will be road with some towpath and eventually xc/epping forest so sounds like 50ish around town and 35ish if things get muddy. thanks @miro_o and @Ramsaye #psitips

  • Just to be clear, I'm talking pinching for cross tyres at 20psi!

    10psi for 42mm tho.

  • My pompino v3. Bought here from Heldring. Ignore those filthy 105 levers. Swaped all parts from my previous builds with borrowed bars and stem from track bike for cross season. It opened cx world of fun to me. :)

  • Really good that. Nature Boy fork?

  • thanks!
yes, indeed. nature boy fork. :)

    part list here

  • It's been a while since i've had flat pedals in any bike...feels so weird

  • Nice to see it's alive and well :)

  • ^^
    beauty
    what fork?

  • Not as refined build as yours, but will get there. Used the parts I had and could get for next to nothing just to get it rolling on cross course. ;)
    Thanks

  • Thanks

    Salsa Vaya fork

  • The vaya fork has a slightly longer axle to crown than the pomp forks and a 50 mm offset unless you specifically ordered a 45mm offset fork. Considering the slight slacking in head angle, how does this affect the handling of your pomp?

  • SO. I've bought a little pompino for my girlfriend, but with the cages + mudguards it's got a lethal amount of toe overlap. How many of you are using 160mm cranks with it? Do you find it makes much of a difference?

  • Ask if she find it's a problem or not.

Best advice is to simply get used to it before resorting to buying smaller cranks.

  • She's having problems with it, and it's making her less confident in traffic too. I'm not sure how else to correct it without taking the cages off again.

  • Is she fixed or SS? Could convert to flats and SS if she's getting wary of fixed and the toe-overlap, though I realise that's not actually a solution for fixed toe-overlap. I know 'get used to it' is not very helpful (although it is true and I started out very worried about - I'm 5'7 so all my bikes have had noticeable toe-overlap - but over time it's faded into the background issue-wise). Another option is to take off the front mudguard? I know front mudguards are nice to have but some soggy toes might be worth it for more confidence on the road, especially in the dark winter.

    TL;DR
If she's fixed, take off the mudguard.
If she's happy to swap to free, ditch the cages and swap to flats and SS cog.
If she's free, ditch the cages.

  • I know 'get used to it' is not very helpful.

I agree, but it's usually the best solution for now.

Another slightly more expensive option is obviously clipless.

  • +1 for clipless. I'm riding a small with time atacs with no real problems. No mudguards though.

  • SS at the moment. Frustratingly I know going clipless would probably give just the right amount of room, but she's not the most balanced cyclist and I don't think I could deal with the guilt if she stacked it.

I think I'll suggest going back to flats for winter.

  • That's a wise option :) I think foot retention for commuting / knocking around town isn't that necessary: yes it's nice, power output improved blah blah blah but confidence and happiness (and safety too) are the most important things, way more important than any marginal gains offered by SS foot retention.

  • Mine. built up with what I had. Not pretty but meh.

Toe overlap with cleats, but you get used to it.
