  • Pompetamine kind of already has that coved no? they are 135 spaced.

  • No good for road wheels - no cantilever mounts, and 135mm is too wide for track hubs.

  • Wouldn't it jut be easier to build up a fixed/free wheel.

  • Use a bolt on cog 135mm single speed disc hub: http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/product/30777/DMR_SingleSpeed_Rear_Hub_DMR_HUB_SS_S_36K?gclid=CLnKgbC_1roCFfMctAodJF0AVw

Or if you want to be able to easily change your SS cog or even pop on some gears, then a hope pro 2 trials.

  • If you want to save a bit of cash over the DXR you could go for something like an Odyssey Hazard. I used to have one with a 10mm axle and cassette driver on my BMX race bike, would have been perfect.

  • Few changes, new Kinesis full carbon forks, new tyres, flipped stem and longer cranks.

I have e fixed/free wheel. It's ideal for commuting but they're rubbish for 'cross. Even with WI freewheel.

That's another new wheel, for a frame that won't take canti's.

That's interesting. These take regular SS cogs (the type that'll fit a shimano road cassette)? It is still a new wheel which I don't need if the right frame is out there. I'm a road cyclist, I have road wheels but want to commute fixed and dabble in sscx, hillclimbs and light trails. I've been waiting years for someone to do a Felt Breed setup as frameset only. The Natureboy is close is a bit overpriced (and overweight).

  • A proper SS wheel is stronger than a road wheel; no dish, innit? One of these if you want a freewheel smaller than 16T

Any suggetions for the same but for disc?

  • There are plenty of Disc/SS cassette hubs to choose from at 135mm OLN, I have Hope on my Pompetamine, had a Novatec on my MTB for years, and a FireEye on my snow wheels.

  • Pompino is 120 rear right?
What are my options for single speed hubs for cross then?

Sorry, it's been a long day and I'm being sloww of reading.

  • Pompino is 120 rear right?
What are my options for single speed hubs for cross then?

1: Flip-Flop road hub with a single freewheel screwed onto it.
2: "Conventional" BMX hub with ditto, option of a 30mm thread for 14T freewheel
3: BMX cassette hub with a HG spline
4: BMX hub with integral driver

For big wheels, you shouldn't need a sprocket smaller than 16T,so the first is the easiest. tartybikes have a good range of freewheels, you have to guess, and choose your price point accordingly, whether the teeth will wear out before the bearings or vice versa.

  • That's alright then. I was getting confused by all the 135 talk.
I've got bog standard formulas with a freewwheel I ended paying more than I should have.

  • I was getting confused by all the 135 talk.

It's easy to remember if you use the right size font:

    <-120mm->
    POMPINO

    <----135mm---->
    POMPETAMINE

  • Aren't bmx hubs spaced at 110mm, or is that the beer talking?

  • Some are, yes, but 5mm spacers will fix that. It's easy to make hubs wider, and difficult to make them narrower.

  • Velosolo amongst others sell such spacers.

  • Yeah, I was just gonna mention that. BMX rear hub spacing is 110mm but I can't think of any that don't have room for a 5mm spacer each side. Also, and please correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that any of the freewheels available on the Tarty Bikes site are fully sealed. Most BMX cassette hubs, on the other hand, are fully sealed, making them a much better choice for SSCX.

  • Again, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong as I've never owned one but I don't believe even the White Industries freewheels are as well sealed as a cassette hub. I have a friend that does a lot of single speed off road riding and he said the ratchet on his was contaminated with moisture and grit after just one wet muddy ride. He uses cassette hubs on all his off road bikes now. It was on his advice I went for a Pompetamine with a Hope SS cassette hub.

  • Every seal can be overcome by enough crap; the best advice if you're going to play in the mud is to get components whose bearings can be easily and cheaply replaced. That does put hubs with common cartridge bearings in first place, but that's easy for Pompetaministas to say, there is plenty of choice at 135mm OLN. At 120mm, it's a bit harder to find a freewheel/hub combo which jumps through the hoops quite so effortlessly.

  • Interesting and giving [sscx]hub discussion.

Sorry. I was referring to a disc hub with a solid 10 mm axel. Or maybe a converter kit that will make that possible

  • This:

Use a bolt on cog 135mm single speed disc hub: http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/product/30777/DMR_SingleSpeed_Rear_Hub_DMR_HUB_SS_S_36K?gclid=CLnKgbC_1roCFfMctAodJF0AVw

Surly does one too,CBM has fixed/free ones: http://www.charliethebikemonger.com/surly-rear-hubs-917-p.asp

On One used to have one but its now discontinued.

  • I am not looking for a threaded hub. I don't want freewheels. I want to be able to change cogs on a freehub on the fly. But I want disc brakes and a solid axel and cartridge bearings. Too me it looks like the Shimano DXR hub i made for cogs like the ones you use with a freehub, no?
