  • Sorry I misread your post, DMR have a 10mm solid axle SS cassette disc hub and IIRC CK does a bolt on one. If you are going for even higher spec there is an American company which does one with infinite/instant engagement, very pricey though and uses proprietary cog.

  • I want to be able to change cogs on a freehub on the fly. But I want disc brakes and a solid axel and cartridge bearings.

The Hope has 10mm bolts rather than nuts, but some of the other options (various rebranded Novatec/KT/Formula hubs, plus others) have 10mm solid axles and track nuts, or 10mm holes right through the middle so you can use a 10x135 QR or a nutted axle

  • thanks. I will look into it.

  • Yeah, you want the Hope single speed. I have two. They're awesome!

  • Again, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong as I've never owned one but I don't believe even the White Industries freewheels are as well sealed as a cassette hub. I have a friend that does a lot of single speed off road riding and he said the ratchet on his was contaminated with moisture and grit after just one wet muddy ride. He uses cassette hubs on all his off road bikes now. It was on his advice I went for a Pompetamine with a Hope SS cassette hub.

I destroyed two WI hubs last 'cross season. They are rebuildable if you can find parts (and replacements aren't cheap). If I was to build a SSCX bike again I'd try and find some kind of compatible single speed cassette hub. Not just because of issues with mud but also because it's easier to change your gear ratio, which is nice given the variety of courses and mud around.

  • Is cold setting a 120mm steelie to 130mm and build up a dished SS-casette-Hope-hub-130mm-wheel straight forward? (Hulsroy?)

  • Hope hubs are 135mm and Pompinos have a bit of a bad rep for cracking stays. Why not get a Pompetamine?

  • For a Pompino? I considered doing it but because of the wishbone seatstays I figured it'd be both tougher and more likely to result in breakage than a standard cold-setting job.

  • In the peculiar case of the Skovlos all you have to do is to look at it and the steel will submerge to your commands. It will cost you a hope ss hub though :-)

  • My steelie has traditional stays - chromo type steel.

  • Thanks Hulsroy - let's see how long my WI freewheel will hold up and take it from there.

    These? I now want one.

Sheldon Brown (I think) wrote as a rule-of-thumb you can easily go one size up with no problems. So 120-130mm, 130-135mm. 120-135 might be pushing it?

Those SS hope hubs are 135mm I think.

If you get to 130mm with your frame you can chuck any road wheel in with some spacers and these... bingo.

Thanks miro_o - I think we might find structural trust by removing the brake bridge (again) - cold set and weld a new slightly longer brakebridge on afterwards. But this is all guess work :]

    Indeed!

  • Save yourself $400 by buying this:

Hadn't got round to looking at prices, fuck that.

  • The way the dropouts are made on the pompetamine is basically the only way to do track ends with disc mount, that will allow you to swap wheels fast and easy right?
If you had the ISO mount on the seat stay it wouldn't work right?

  • Putting the caliper directly above the axle works for most calipers (not long 4-piston XTs...grrrr), the between stays mount isn't for wheel removal, it's to get the caliper out of the way of mudguard and rack stays.

  • Yup.

    These? I now want one.

I did caution you that it wont be cheap though ;)

  • What would be a realistic amount to ask for this?

Built it, rode it for 1km, realised it's just too small. That and I don't really have a need for it in the stable has me thinking of selling. The alternative would be to ditch the frame and find a larger/more suitable frame and swapping everything over.

XL Pompetamine, Hope headset/seat collar, Alfine 8 speed, BB5 road brakes, On One bars, Thomson stem and post, Toupe, Stronglight cranks, Velo Orange hammered guards, Elite cages, VO bell.

  • Give you a tenner for it. How tall are you?!

  • 20mm setback post might change your feel - or just make wheelie (too) easy.
