  • New Pompetamine f&f for £97? Go on then.

I'm leaving the Langster club and joining this one...

  • You do realised the pompetamine is 135 oln. Also you'll need disk brakes.

  • ...unless you plan to run the bike fixed with a spaced rear axle.

  • I haz a set of unused shimano BR-R505 road disc calipers going, I bought them a while back on a whim but never used them, F+R, no rotors £30 + p&p

  • I need mechanical I'm afraid.

Planning on running the Pompetamine single speed I think, with BB-5s, BB7s or Shimano BR-CX75, though the latter are currently out of stock at Madison.

  • They're cable. But you know that now because I told you in that PM.

  • R505 is 105 is it?

  • I think the BR-515 is 105, so this is probably Tiagra level, but they don't still seem to make it.

The BR-CX75 is some kind of Ultegra level, and they're only £44.99 each, but I think that's overkill for a Pomp.

  • BR-R505 is a non-series component, the fact that they gave it a 500-series number typically places it somewhere in the vicinity of "105" in Shimano's mind, but it could find itself paired with lower groups too. I think BR-R515 replaces 505, rather than being a different grade.

  • Ah right. I think I saw the BR-R515 lumped with 105 somewhere today, but it might not have been the Madison trade catalogue but just a lazy website somewhere.

Incidentally, how are they meant to perform? The few reviews I could find seemed generally positive.

Also, as a wheelset, I could get the Shimano WH-MT55 from Planet X for about £120, the M:Wheel Shimano M475/Mavic A317 wheelset for around £110, or a more rough and ready 29er wheelset, with rotors, for about £70. Which would be the best course of action?

  • Which would be the best course of action?

Tell us what they are for.

  • Stopping.

  • And slowing down of course, the wheels will be for going.

  • Mt55's are £125 with discs at merlin

  • ^^^^Mainly street riding, but with the option of following friends on more suitable bikes off-road in Epping or the South Downs, and maybe some CX later in the year if I get the chance.

  • So for under £150 you want a set of wheels which will transform one bike into three different, better ones?

I've got a pair of CX75's in the post- are they now available in the UK?

I ordered mine from the US as I couldn't find a UK stockist.

Yes, is that so much to ask?

Really, I just want a wheelset that will take disc brakes and let me ride my new bike. I was just wondering which would offer the best value for money and explaining what I would be hoping to use the bike for, not expecting that a cheap wheelset would turn a Pompetamine into a mountain bike and a cross bike. It's probably more versatile than a Langster, and should be nicer to ride down the Lea Valley cycle path and down the canal, essentially*that's all I need.

Fatbirds seemed to be showing them in stock, but I couldn't find them anywhere else. Madison will have them in from 1st May so I'd be surprised if they were widely available here before then.

  • I hope they aren't shit.

  • I know a few people who've ridden the Roubaix Expert Disc which has them and they were well impressed.

  • What levers?

  • Ultegra, mechanical I think

  • Decided I can't be arsed having my Pomp bead-blasted before I've even ridden it. Will tape over the nasty Easton fork logos and just ride the bloody thing, I think.

  • Yes, is that so much to ask?

Get the WH-MT55, I've never had a problem with cheap Shimano wheels. If you break them, get something stronger.

  • I'm going to go for the second hand option after all, as they include tyres and rotors.

Hoping to spend my Easter Sunday collecting the frame then building it up.
