  • Spare room available is a double room, with queen size bed, in Fattoria Poggerino. Price is E85 per night for B+B, reserved for 1-3rd October, 2 nights, check out on 3rd.

just google some l'eroica photos and convince yourself this is the best cycle event of the year.

  • Are most forumengers going to be in Gaiole on Saturday as well, for the vintage fair? Been lurking on here awhile but heading over for this on 1979 Guerciotti and would be good to meet folks over some Rosso di Montalcino.

  • I am going to stay in Radda but I am going to see the fair in Gaiole. I am going on a blue de rosa '84

  • we'll be in gaiole all day sat yes, i'm on a silver 82 mercian and not sure what john is riding - will catch some lunch and then some beers and maybe dinner too!

  • how difficult is the 200k Tilover?

  • i've not done the 200 but john has (105 champ)

as i understand it, not too bad as long as you take it easy and don't have any mechanicals - i've done that distance before and the trick is to set off at silly o-clock and take plenty of water/food breaks
    (or in the case wine/cheese)

  • I am worried about the wine bit tbh. I have done that distance but from london to bornemouth there weren't any mountains...

  • It's a long way, but you're not cycling race pace and with food stops about every 20ish k it's very do-able. I did it 0530-1730 stopping at every stop and wasn't overly fit/trained up for it. It's essential to start early, even though it's freezing, just take some kneewarmers, stuff some paper in your top and take some form of glove for the wind chill, used cut up socks last year and chucked them, once sun was up.
The two climbs are quite sharp, second to Asciano worse, as it's very exposed to sun and you're tired. Sensible to have low range gear on your bike, rather than a racing block.
Weather can make it more tricky, as rain makes the strada bianca very slippy, plus takes a certain degree of balls to fly downhill on the gravel, quite soul-destroying braking and riding at 10mph down a steep downhill, which kills your average speed.

By the time you reach the last 40ks you realise you're almost there, the last bit's not too difficult, you fly down a steep tarmac hill into Gaiole, have your photo taken, take the grit out of your eyes, re-hydrate with cold beer and sense of satisfaction is immense.

  • ^ sounds wonderful, looking forward to it a little more everyday!

  • if all goes well I'll be wearing an lfgss cap thanks to JD, and riding the Nishiki. my friend Frans will be on the 1970s Speedwell behind it. looking forward to meeting some of you there!

  • It might be worth cross-posting this:

  • I am looking for a 6 speed freewheel block with bigger cogs -not a racing block - to do this

  • evening.. so finally booked my flights - i had no choice about it sadly and it will mean i may have to sleep in the airport on monday night for my flight at 07.20 tuesday morning but heyho - that'll learn me for not having a drivers licence.

    can't wait!

  • I will be staying in a bungalow at this campsite - http://www.campingorlandoinchianti.it/ arriving on Monday 26th, so hoping to explore Tuscany a bit my friend won't arrive until nearer to the weekend so if any of you are in the area let me know.

Does anyone have any idea how easy it will be to get around via public transport, or is car hire the only option?

  • first year i got a train from florence to sienna and john picked me up and every other year someone has had a car - definitely the easiest option

sadly this time i am flying solo and hoping john will pick me up friday morning and drop me off monday night - anyone else staying in or near pisa on thursday night?

  • It's a long shot, but does anyone have an entry that they are unable to use?
I am desperate to go this year, but by the time I had definately confirmed the time off work, the event was full.......my stupidity, I know.

Anyone has, or knows of how I can participate, please let me know....Thanks!

  • you can register on the day but they charge you 80euros i think rather than the 40 i think it costs?

i'm still sleeping in pisa airport for 2 nights at the mo! i need to make some arrangements (doh)

  • There is some garbled info on The site saying that the first 100 can pay €100 and get in..... I can't take that chance though, and also can't get there for the 9.00 am opening of that queue....

    I can't go and I'm registered.

I remember seeing somewhere that reservations are none transferable....

I'll have a nosey on the site. If it's kosher I'll talk to you about it.

    Bad luck, mate...

  • do you think hthat the italians will be that strict? I really doubt it, it was the same on the etape caledonia last year and my frined went in another person's place

  • Is it not just possible to go and say that I'm you? Do they need a passport or something?
I won't be causing trouble.....I'm an old git now!!

    Luci=old git?

  • But I look young ;0)
I got asked for proof of age in the states and eveything!!

  • Does anyone know exactly what details are required to 'sign on' for the race? What would I need to show as far as identification etc?
When you have received your entry details, what exactly comes in the pack?
I only ask, as I know of someone else who used another person's marathon details before with no issues, but I want to make sure it could be done annonamously (sp)....
    Cheers
