I have Garmin - follow me! (Except where I get impatient and try and take you along a dual carriage way because I think I know better than GPS. I've learnt that lesson now).

yay! just persueded the missus that going on holiday on the 9th August was better than the 7th! So I'm still looking forward to this. Don't think I've ever been to Herne Bay, apart from driving through to get to Margate as a kid many, many years ago*.
*yes, this was before the interweb, before home PCs, before colour TV, when England was in black & white 405 lines

Need to up the mileage to build stamina and as long as I don't die on one of the hills, this should be perfect.

Well that's everything settled then. Thanks for that.
Rather tempting to stop for lunch at Herne Bay, drink a few pints and then check out that Viking Trail..
In which case there's the Margate to St Pancs train back which can take loads of bikes and is super fast from Ashford.

Kris and I have just got back from doing this ride and it was great.
There were 4 hills of note:
- Shooters Hill
- Flower Hill Way & Church Rd (double hit)
- Basser Hill
We will have to wait at the top of these to regroup.
If there are any Rochester/Gillingham residents reading I would appreciate some advice on a more elegant way to get through that conurbation, rather than using the ring road.
The route consists of some A/B roads and country lanes, the traffic was generally light.

^ im on it... ill post up a variation either tonight or tomorrow and itll probably be one for us to travel thrugh together to ensure no losses. ill stop short of doing the whole tour guide thing, pointing out areas of interest though..

Also after we get to Herne Bay, if we don't arrive too late in the day, some of us might continue another 20KM around the coast to Margate.
The coast there is excellent, the ride is totally traffic-free and the sun should set quite late.
This would take the full ride to 120KM which is the same as riding to Clacton-on-Sea.

I'm in Rochester as I type (and stuck here all weekend). I'll go for a ride on Sunday and see what I can find.
Which way are you coming in to Medway? Through Cuxton and over the motorway bridge? -

I have just been there, they must have cleaned it.
This is the bit I am talking about(20KM traffic-free coastline):

ive got a route in my head after looking at the map. ill pop over there tomorrow and give my alternative a ride to make sure its suitable for 40- 50 riders without getting us into any trouble. im judging that we will hit back onto your route at the roundabout @ junction of yokosuka way/pier road/lower rainham road...ooh i might have spotted a nicer way.. ill do both and let you pick...

I would have loved to go through the tunnel but apparently no bikes are allowed.
Open to any suggestions to make the ride even better.
Thanks. -

yeah its pretty grim...my advice..roll into margate...then keep on rolling through to broadstairs...much nicer and the train line that runs through margate also goes through broadstairs.
IIRC its a further 6 miles.

Thanks.yep thats right no bikes in the tunnel...I have never decided to use it as a short cut from gillingham to strood...especially not late at night when tired... i wouldnt do that...

Not really too fussed about the place we end up, just want to give people the chance to roll along the coast.
There is another big hill just outside of Broadstairs that I fear would finish people off.
I was really impressed by that Viking trail.
Stragglers unite innit!
