Yeah it is nice. If you park (or ride) to reculver fort it becomes a nice 33. Mile circular trip which is lovely if you have the time to poodle. And I know the hill outside broadstairs that you mean. It is a bit of a killer at the end of the day...
@ fruitbat in case you didn't know you sir haz pm.

Coast path looks wicked, surely worth going down to Margate just to ride along it...

admittedly I have mapped it to go through gillingham town centre rather than round but the sheer number of small roads and turnings to go the other way would surely mean someone getting lost...and its just normal town centre roads. it shouldnt be dangerous. and because of one way system we get to roll past Priestfields stadium. home of the Gills.

Blimey Jaitch, really showing the sights of Medway there travelling through the roughest parts of Gillingham, another idea might be on leaving the M2 bridge to head towards Maidstone Road, Rochester up to the Bridgewood Roundabout then along Walderslade Woods (cycling on the cycle path) then on Lidsing, Bredhurst, Medway Services and crossing the A2 at Rainham. If I knew how to mark it google I would do it.

ha yeah I know...but seeing as everyone else will already have cycled down from london that route^ (which I didnt even think about even though I have cycled it a few times) will be quite a bit longer and does go UP to the bridgewood. ill map out a route on that way too and let Ma3k have a look at it.
edit: here it is. very nice ride a bit of a hill straight up from the motorway bridge but the bit of maidstone road running down from bredhurst to the centre of rainham (and actually all the way down to the lower rainham road) is a very nice long down hil but as its the main road to the M2 it makes it quite busy. oh and the direct route is about 5 miles overall and this is about 12-13 miles.

My geared bike is a blue Fausto Coppi, nothing special. Didnt realise quite how much more that route was, coming from Walderslade its my normal route out to the east of Medway.

yeah i was pretty shocked too my parents live in central rainham and as I live halfway between the m2 and rochester so its a ride i do every so often. never realised how far it was.
oh and in that case who is it i see almost every evening coming up maidstone road rochester on a fixed mercian towards walderslade? i would stop him but I always (no exception) see him as he is halfway round the roundabout and im going off in the other direction...

First time I'm going to be cycling this distance. One question though, would a hybrid bike with slick tires be ok for this ride?

yep, it would be spot on.lets be honest, a track bike with risers on is just a hybrid with one gear and no freewheel...

Yep.
Besides, there were lots of commuters on the duniwch dynamo on commuters and old MTBs, never done more than their commute in their lives and finished.
You'll be fine :)

I'm sure it's been said earlier but can't you get groupsave action on this route? 4 tix for price of 2, which can be bought on the day.
I'm coming back from Margate/Broadstairs (and then cycling back next day) so this info is still helpful, ta!
@Jaitch That could be a plan. (Sunday)
