If you get good weather for this you'll have a great ride.
A couple of points to consider based on my rides in this direction.
First there's only one train an hour back into London from Herne Bay. Also there may be a limit on the number's of bikes allowed on the train. A bunch of us got a train back from Canterbury last Sunday and were told the limit was 3 bikes only. In fact they wouldn't even sell us tickets in case the conductor didn't let us on. Luckily the conductor was less of a jobsworth and let all 7 of us on!The route is so easy though, it's worth considering riding back too!

The group will tend to stagger itself on the return leg anyway as some people want to get straight home, some want to drink, eat and check out the area.
We have had this sort of thing before, usually we just pile(respectfully) into the carriage and see what happens.
If the conductor doesn't want to let fully assembled bikes on the train I will personally drop the wheels out of peoples bikes whereupon they become luggage and not bicycles.
Then I will reassemble them when we get back to London.
We should definitely be able to get back OK though.

In my experience, that's one of the best arguments to submit if you come across a jobsworth on the rail network. There would'nt be an issue if someone was boarding the train with two massive suitcases so why would a bike frame and pair of wheels not be permitted?

There's also the Viking Trail along the sea wall to Margate for more train options plus Canterbury is about 6 miles away.

Trains run 1 minute past the hour, every hour up until 23:01.
Leaving at 9 from Greenwich should mean we cover the distance(100km mainly flat) in under 5 hours putting us there for 2 in the afternoon. Weather permitting that is a whole lot of time for sunbathing.
I will be checking out the town/beach eating fish and chips and then drinking heavily thus will probably bring up the rear-guard leaving the town.
Just need to keep an eye out for upcoming engineering works, at present the information available only goes up to 31st July.
If there are engineering works taking place that Sunday then we will switch to the preceding Saturday.I would prefer to ride down there on a Sunday as the roads should be more pleasant.

Well that's everything settled then. Thanks for that.
Rather tempting to stop for lunch at Herne Bay, drink a few pints and then check out that Viking Trail..

Liking your style. Beach? Chips? Booze? It's a winning look.

Blates - thanks for sorting all this out btw - looking forward to it loads!

How are Easties getting to Greenwich Park? Was thinking of trying out the Greenwich foot tunnel but it seems to be intermittently closed for works and stuff.
Tower Bridge then Jamaica Road?

CW prints off instructions but makes mental note to stick with the pack as map-reading skills are shite, even with strong daylight and prescription glasses.

you could always use a sat-nav, but INHO that spoils the fun! -
