Ah, it wasn't just me then? ;]

i got fed up with wearing out sneakers and payed up for a pair of Wolverine 1000 mile
I hope they'll last more than 1000 miles though, that's not really that far
-
• #629
oh, and going back to sneakers seems pretty far fetched, at least til summer

They look pretty decent.
I had a pair of dark brown suede solid boots for years, but they're very heavy, so I ditched them to buy a pair of those hipster boots with a zip from River Island.
What a ripp off? They hasn't lasted a full season. I had them for a month and they're falling apart.
Total shit.I'm off to TKMaxx right now to buy a pair of those brogue boots from White. If they're sold out I will go for Red Wings. Damn my hipster ways!

Go straight for Red Wings IMO, way better finish and much hardier I reckon.

Am I being overly fussy?!
Don't think so, looks like someone's varnished those soles
-

The Red Wings and Wolverine look nice. Will have to investigate those.
Kboy, where did you purchase those? I'm going to have to come up from Brighton for this.

lolocopter^^
nimbh and Balk's probably right, this thread fucking a bit wank. But I still like that we talk about stuff ... any stuff ... here. So what? Like a lof of things on this forum.
I'm all about the cheap shit shoes, mostly trainers or Monkee boots.. I can see what GA2G's getting at with the handmade stuff, some of them do look lovely and probably wear beautifully ...
Anyway +1 on Gerald's mention of Paraboots, the classic paraboot shoe is this. My french exchange was into them back in 86 and I wanted them for years after ... got a pair now, had em ages, still lovely:

I really dig nice old-style walking boots, something like this but with even less toe and more lacing ... I had a wonderful swiss pair, resoled with Vibrams to last, but killed them with neglect (dried out beyond the point of no return) which I really regret.

And I'm just going to leave this here: £15-£25 ish. And they're fucking great.

I can;t stand anything with wood and rubber in layers in the heel. They were everywhere in the early nineties, me and a pal called them wood rubber wood rubber wood shoes. Horrible.
As bad as the all saints folded over tops things.

I got them online from Ranshop since I couldn't find them anywhere in london. 2 weeks after that though I spotted them in one of the shops on Dray Walk, off Brick Lane
I really really like them. Tried the redwing gentleman traveller as well but wasn't too keen on the chunky rubber sole. I kind of regretted that when i fell over for the 4th time in 2 days back in sweden at christmas though...

I used to work four or five doors up from Ran, on Bold Street in Liverpool. Cracking little shop.

Thanks mate. I like the look of the Red Wing Rigger, Round and Beckman boots as well.
Hate buying things online without trying them though.

same here. i tried the redwing gentleman traveller and googled how sizing and fit compares. in the redwing i'm a us8.5, ranshop recommended a us9 based on that. i'm usually a us9.5 but the 9 was perfect. Ranshop were really good with help over email too

Hmmm... Classic workwear, so strongly disagree... They've always been popular with denim nazis like me...

Is it just me, or do all these shoes look goofier and uglier the more expensive/high quality/bespoke they get?
The shapes of OTP low-mid price shoes look way better, more stylish, less bulky and more refined.
It's all about the Goodyear Welt as opposed to stuck-on soles. Stuck on shoes have a short lifespan and are effectively dead when the sole is worn out. GYW soles can have a completely new sole re-stitched on for a small outlay, they come back looking new, you can do this up to three times. I know John Lobb in Northampton charge around £80 which isn't bad considering the amount of work involved. I have a few pairs of both types, GYW have their place, I see your point - GYW soles will always be thicker than stuck on.

^I am in no way connected with JL - I just have in-depth knowledge of their factory...other Northampton brands are available.
teddy??
