kboy - thanks for the suggestions
hugo - I'm after boots that workmen use (but I won't be doing workmen work in them) something similar to Redwings.
There were some nice Filson x Wolverine 1000 Mile in Son of Stag but I've got a new bike in the pipeline so couldn't justify the money.
I think I'm going to order these from the US and hope they fit, for £130 they are significantly cheaper than similar alternatives so worth a punt.
The white sole will probably go down like a lead balloon on here but I can't find anything I like with a commando sole and leather soles are way too proper for what I want.

Have you had a look at Timberlands? More than just deck shoes and desert boots.
They're also well built. My dad bought a pair of leather boat shoes back in the mid 90s and they're still in semi-decent nick despite being abused.

I haven't, didn't realise they did anything decent.
I'll have a look at their other offerings, thanks

Timberlands used to be quite good. Today's mainstream Timberlands are in my opinion... Junk.. Once one of the last remaining New England shoemakers--- Swartz's Timberland concept having not just saved the family shoe business from extinction but turning it into a multi-billion dollar global fashion player (and Jeffery himself a billionaire)-- its now just another fashion brand with an image and offshore production. Shoes are nearly all now made in Asia-- they do have a nice line of US made shoes (" Eastern Standard Series") but they are the exception. Timberland boat shoes, for example, in the 1980s were made in the US and a league better than the competition--- a big cut above Sperry. Their slogan was something like "You can't get a better handsewn".. and it was nearly true.. By the 1990s their boat shoes were of mediocre quality... Today the brand belongs to the VF Corp alongside other "brands" such as East Pac, North Face, Wrangler,..... What I've seen in the shops does not appear to indicate any improvement ...

If Red Wings are now over priced wank (according to Pisti) who makes a good alternative work boot?
I like the look of Danner but would have to make a guess at sizing and order them from the US.
LL Bean have an awesome boot that's a bit of a Red Wing Ranger knock off that is WELL priced. States only. I'm hoping for my uncle to bring a pair back me- unless anyone here is heading there and back? (pm me innit).

Not anymore. The stitching on one side at the base of the tongue has come loose.
Perhaps the stories of reduced quality since they moved their production to India have substance.
I'm taking them back to be exchanged. I like them and they are very comfortable.

My old MD had to take a pair back to the Grenson shop at Liverpool st. He had to properly make his case as they were reluctant to take them back, but after some discussion they did.

Does anyone have any experience of Meermin shoes? Very close to pulling the trigger on a pair..

I sent a pair of grenson longwings back that I bought online. They often look great in photos but not so great up close imo. Definitley seem to be a notch below compared to similar priced british companies.
I have a hankering for some lundhags as winter boots, will check them out next time I am in Sweden http://www.lundhags.se/home-2/

As a company, Grenson has been 'modernised' and 'streamlined'.

They were an impulse purchase from a retailer which had a branch near work. They exchanged them without quibble, and assured me I could have my money back if it happens again.

A year after they were ordered my custom Russells have arrived. Even then they weren't exactly what I ordered. Another pair that are exactly what I ordered is being made now so I got these "cheap"

I would say true - marginally smaller but so marginal that go with what you normally would

^nice Russell moccasins! What ones and how much?
Those ones are Thula Thula, I ordered the minimalist ones, but they forgot and stuck the thick leather on between the boot and the sole. So I got them cheap, as they weren't going to fit anyone else unless they found someone with the same feet as me! I paid about $270 plus duty
I have to pay full price for the minimalist, so $385, and they will be made in December.
I have just been out for a walk in them, and they are impressive, I've never had walking boots like it, the flexibility is amazing, and it feels so nice to have boots with the softness of slippers.
Redwing are opening a shop on Newburgh St, opening night piss-up is next Weds, 24th, 6pm
