Cool story bro ^^
And no, Fred, he's not right. No one ever said anything about formality. And as for soles, lots of the very best shoemakers offer rubber-soled shoes and boots. What with the weather as it is, is it any wonder people are talking about boots? As for me and what I favour, I don't even have a pair of workwear shoes or boots, or any with rubber soles (excepting crepe). Out of my good footwear five pairs have leather soles and two have crepe. The only pair I have that's in the least bit contentious here is a pair of 'premium' sneakers, and I only like them because the quality, finish and comfort easily rivals some of the best benchmade shoes I've seen in a 'proper leather shoe' shop.
If you want to be a nitpicking dullard and only talk about italianate, overwrought, unwearably expensive foot-confectionary, with absolutely no diversity, then please start another thread, or maybe throw it in the NAHBS thread with all the other masturbatory, elitist shit.
P.S. They're just shoes

This thread really has legs.
Yes young Josh, you're very welcome. ;-)
I'm awaiting someone starting the Pink Feather Boa, or the Chihuahua As An Accessory thread. It really is coming to that. :-)

Bought these as a treat to myself in January.. worn them once due to the shitty Edinburgh weather (suede shoe with a leather sole). Worth every penny though.

Er, no, I won't. And of don't think I'm moaning either. I grew up with my grandparents, and my grandad in particular, left a lasting impression. He was a lawyer, a QC actually, and only wore brogues or oxfords. I used to clean and polish his shoes when I was a nipper, and grew to appreciate quality leather shoes. His shoes varied in age, but not much in style. They ranged from 15-30 years old; by the time he died some may have been nearly 50 years old, and had outlived him. My interest in this thread is because of what I learned from a very old man. He knew a good shoe.
I think you would have a leg to stand on if in turn you didn't post some of the most horrific shoes I have ever seen outside of camden high street.

The bottom of page 6 of this thread represents me, and the rest is a case of Vive La Différence. I salute the work of artisans, even if some of their clunky and garish wear do not suit my personal tastes at all.

talking of aged footwear, got these in 1982 and used for a number of alpine, scottish and elsewhere trips. long superceded in performance, comfort and weight by plastic double boots, but nonetheless they fit like a glove.
scarpa bronzo, greased anfibio leather, 3/4 steel footbed and vibram sole

Anyone knows if Oliver Spencer is any good? Quite liked the look of their saints soled brouges. Says made in England on em too

Vibram sole too, (or banana sole as some tits call it).

Very much liking my William Lennon boots in this weather, although it is all down to choice of sock.

Some are made in god's own cobblery Northampton and are, therefore, very good indeed.
Others are not and must be disregarded.

It seems, and this is only from googling it, that all those marked Made In England are made in a Northampton factory, but I haven't been able to find out which one. Others are made in Portugal I think.

^ aha. iirc they were 300 notes or so, gotta be proper good for that money

is there a thread for extreme cold weather/snow clothing and in particular boots? need.
sorry to derail from "proper leather" theme for a sec: in relation to the above, and just in case anyone else is in the market for cold weather gear, north face (*insert willie wonka meme here) have a sale on at the moment. picked up some "snow beast" boots half price from the covent garden shop on saturday.

should keep the plates toasty in arctic norway next month. *really is going on an adventure.
derail over.
back to the cobblers.

look nice enough but TNF is a bit 'lifestyle'. if you really want boots fit for arctic adventures then this is more appropriate > http://www.needlesports.com/Catalogue/Footwear/Mountain-Boots/Olympus-Mons-SPO-OM

Agreed. Any leather shoe/boot than lasts more than 2 decades, with normal-ish use, is definitely a proper leather shoe. Absofuckinglutely.

I have (proper leather) sneakers that are over 20 years old...

And you'll get a good shoeing if you don't shut up...;^p
