Sounds like they've just perished over time... Happened to an old pair of ice hockey boots of mine, went to give them a wipe and they disintegrated before my eyes...

Maybe I totally misunderstood the title of this thread, and thought that PROPER LEATHER SHOES meant shoes that were made predominantly of leather, and could be repaired by cobblers and so on.
The shoes that Superprecise and nuknow seem to favour, are not proper leather shoes in my opinion, but shoes made with some leather. And most certainly anti-formal.
Superprecise, why not change the name of the thread to LEATHER SHOES? There would be a greater range of shoes that fall within that genre. Proper Leather Shoes have leather uppers, leather soles and leather tongues. Or at the very least, are made by artisans, using time honoured skills; not mass produced banana soled rubbish.

Fuck. What a load of fascist fucking bollocks.
"My definition of proper is > your definition of proper. Ergo I am right and you are wrong."
Seriously?
It's a thread about leather shoes. We may disagree on the definition of "proper", but is part of the fun. There's a lot that gets posted here that I really don't like, but I keep coming back because I enjoy having my perceptions challenged by the experiences and aesthetics of others.

Oh give it a fucking rest. If you had the wherewithal you'd realise it's 'proper leather shoes' as opposed to the mass-produced, disposable tat in the Trainers thread. Basically any well-made shoes belong in here, that are made by craftspeople out of high quality, durable materials.
I'm fucked if I'm going to make a 'Crepe-soled Suede Loafers Thread' or an 'Orthopedic Vibram Boot Thread', but if you like I'll make a 'Crocodile-Skin Drug Baron Winklepickers Thread' just for you if it'll stop you moaning on here.

Er, no, I won't. And of don't think I'm moaning either. I grew up with my grandparents, and my grandad in particular, left a lasting impression. He was a lawyer, a QC actually, and only wore brogues or oxfords. I used to clean and polish his shoes when I was a nipper, and grew to appreciate quality leather shoes. His shoes varied in age, but not much in style. They ranged from 15-30 years old; by the time he died some may have been nearly 50 years old, and had outlived him. My interest in this thread is because of what I learned from a very old man. He knew a good shoe.
Anyone know a shop selling Viberg boots in London?
My hiking boots started to disintegrate last weekend. They're probably 10 years old, but hardly used at all. The rubber sole had gone very very soft, wore down about 8mm of sole in 1 day and then the glue gave up and the whole sole started to come off. Anyone experienced the same thing?
